Hey guys... I'm looking for a second opinion on whether it would feasible to make a decent B&W canvas print in size 24x20" from an image that is only 6x5" at 300dpi in jpeg? It's quite a tight crop of someones face, taken from a larger image, hence the small dimensions.

I've stretched a few images for large poster prints previously but I have grave concerns about this one, and taking a punt on a canvas that's for someone else is not really an option. I'm ordering with DSCL and have emailed the image to them for advice but have not had a reply and would really like to be swayed one way or the other this weekend so I can order on Monday. They might well get back to me in the meantime, but I thought it was worth posting here for some views in the meantime.

The image is a high contrast black and white conversion. I'm happy to PM a Dropbox link if that helps.

Cheers in advance!

A quick calculation makes this about an 8Mb image. Now I have had images from this size enlarged to similar sizes, but these were camera originals, and using quality optics, not crops, from another size. I would be very doubtful if you would get an acceptable 20 X 24 from this. It's going to be the original images resolution that's the problem. Is there enough detail to get to that size satisfactorily. I wouldn't think so. Try taking the image and drop it into Photoshop and change the image size to 20 x 24. What does it look like. ? The canvas will hide some of the imperfections , but not the majority .Personally I'd wit to hear from the lab as they have the image and know their equipment .

Hey John, thanks for that. Appreciate you taking the time to help.

DSCL have replied to me now and said they're confident it'll look fine. The pic is a high contrast conversion so it's style will most likely carry any loss of detail. I appreciate it's difficult for you to make an accurate judgement without seeing the actual image, but I thought it was worth throwing it out there for feedback anyway.

Thanks again!

First off you don't need 300ppi to get a good image. I've printed down to 75ppi and images look great - With canvas a lot of the detail is lost in the material.

So sending your print @ 75ppi will result in a 24 x 20 print

PPI = Pixels / Print size
PPI = 1800 / 24
PPI = 75

The other axis
PPI = 1500 / 20
PPI = 75

6x5 @ 300ppi (not dpi) = 1800 x 1500 pixels = 2.7Mp

If there's a lot of compression that may affect the quality more.

My calculation assumed an RGB image so its 1800 x 1500 per channel, so that's 2.7Mb x 3 = 8.1 Mb

I mistook Megapixels for megabytes lol Sorry John.
Pixels and the quality of those pixels is all that matters
