Image size on Wordpress

I've been sticking at around 1000px along the long edge. This makes it small enough that they dont take too long to load but still look ok on screen and also if anyone were to copy an image and blow it up for printing it would look pretty naff. There is no point uploading a huge resolution image if most peoples screens wont even display that level of detail.

I do 800px and they are clearly visible but 'safe'.

I have a 10x8 taken from a 100kByte Facebook photo (I think it was 720 on the longest side from memory) that the owner is more than happy with.

It's not competition standard but....

I do 800 wide, and a lot of people teel me I should start going bigger. Not something I wish to do with the amount of images on my site.

In the middle of building my website and now just about to upload some images for the gallery. What size is best to upload, I am only on a basic hosting package with Tso at the moment which allows me 500mb space.

What size do other people on here upload there images at?

Thanks.

Don't forget that you could also use Amazon S3 storage with an appropriate plugin to store your larger gallery size images and video if you are concerned about the package you are on.
