Image size for website

Just a quick one regarding your thoughts on image sizes for websites.

As images are now viewed on anything from mobile phones to large high definition screens what size do you think is the optimal size for a website?

I have been adding my pictures at 1000px along the long side of the image, but as I now have a 27 inch screen it feels a little small. Not only that, some of the small screens have quite large resolutions.

Granted I'm not going to stick up the full size ones but what do you think is a good size?

I wouldn't go above 1000 to be honest, not everyone has high res displays.

I think google analytics has a record of visitors screen sizes, you could always see what the average is from that?

800x536 for me. Makes uploading faster and as I don't watermark my shots probably too small to make stealing worthwhile

personally I don't water mark either.
