We've been requested to post this, so we thought a few members might be interested in it :)

The upgrade of my website is almost complete and it now operates as image library. See it at:

www.ardrey.co.uk

I will be selling my own images on the site, and I am also seeking contributions from other photographers and illustrators.

Initially, I’m looking for 4 - 6 togs to contribute images. Although some of the text needs a little tweak you will find full details of the deal are on the site and I’ll be very happy to discuss any other matters either on this site or over the phone if preferred.
In a nutshell the deal is:

• The site is mainly (although not exclusively) aimed at designers and creatives who are looking for images to be used on websites.
• Photographs are sold at different prices for 3 different resolutions.
• Photographers decide on the price they wish to sell their own images at.
• The fee is split 50/50 with the site and the tog - I’m VAT registered, so the split will be after the deduction of VAT.

Interested parties should email me to arrange a conversation to discuss the matter in detail and I will tell you all. brian@ardrey.co.uk

NB. The images currently on the site have been loaded only as examples and to test the operation of the site and are NOT for sale.

I think its broke.. SPORT brings up flowers.. oh hum :)

The last line of message (in bold) says that the images on the site are for example and site testing only.

Yeagh.. I still would have expected them to be sample sports.. :)

I have looked at the site and my first reactions would be no thanks mainly due to this phrase: "There are no restrictions on usage and pricing is very simple and clear. "

Buyers/Licensees should clearly be informed that they are purchasing the use of the image, not the copyright to the image and they cannot use it for any use ie resale or for resale items, if the image includes a model, particular a minor then uses including religion, politics, sex or anything derogatory to the model should not be permitted. That the images are for use on websites is mentioned in passing but many companies want to use one image for more than one purpose.

I have seen quite a few sites start up selling images and nearly as many crash, often owing money to contributors which has, I admit, made me somewhat cynical and more careful. VAT - not applicable to all overseas purchasers so what happens there or is this solely for selling in the UK? Advertising - how much advertising will be done and where, this is essential to bring in customers and is expensive which is where many sites fail, expecting the web to do it for them.

Exclusivity - this is not mentioned, is it required or not?

It would appear this image library is in it's early stages at present and any queries can be taken up with the sites owners to satisfy any concerns people may have about submitting their work. This seems fairer than pouring cold water on a new venture.

If its posted on here then it can be commented on here I say.. Otherwise its just a plain old advert.

I suspect Microsoft may own the copyright and/or licence on some of those test images. ;)

However, I like the site layout and navigation, it works well, but whether considering being a contributor is worthwhile is another matter but good luck anyway.

Microsoft don't worry about obtaining licenses for images they use......Iconic Britain anyone!

Personally, I keep my images OFF the web. Once up there they are free for all.

I disagree. I was not pouring cold water on a new venture, rather voicing my concerns/queries in light of previous experience and giving reasons for those concerns rather than just dismissing the idea out of hand.

PS. I have just been informed that the PhotoShelter are closing their PhotoShelter Collection next month (their Personal Collection remains)

TBH I'm initially put off by the fact that the site is branded as "Brian Ardrey" which IMO gives the impression that the images are his.

Nice idea; poorly executed.
