Afternoon all

I only bought my first camera a month or so ago and I have a noob question.

I currently use the free version of photoshop and find it very simple and easy to do the basics, but was wondering what more can you do with Lightroom, Elements etc?

Never done any image editing before I started so this is all completely new to me.

Thanks in advance

DON'T waste money, one of THE most powerful image editing packages is FREE.

GIMP

Has a learning curve more than Elements but, you will have one heck of a program

If gimp is so powerful, why would it be that no professionals, all doing their best to save money, use it?

Strange thing, that.

John, you can download a free 30-day trial of Elements, Lightroom and full-on Photoshop - all three if you have enough room on your system. There are plenty of tutorials on tuh interwebs, and a lot of books available from shops and libraries.

And of course there is plenty of free advice here on TP, some which you may even find to be accurate ;)

Why is it strange, show me anywhere that I stated it could replace Adobe Photoshop, the reply was to a new person considering Elements or a simplar prices program, I assume you did not equate it that. Had he asked about Photoshop I would have given a different answer.

In a recent photo mag where all , Elements, Corel PsP, GIMP, Lightrrom etc were tested Gimp had a vaery reasonable score, over 87%, Elements 92%, not bad for a FREE program.

GIMP is a very highly respected program

Just out of interest- what score did Photoshop CS5 Extended get??

I only ask as I have that programme- tried GIMP didnt think it compared to Elements 9, never mind the full blown version of CS5

Les

Why is what I said so very difficult to understand

person considering Elements or a similar priced program

Can you get CS5 for £100, no then how can it be a similar priced comparison.

In that price range, oh I give up, have the last word if you like.

If you have a Mac, iPhoto is great bit of software. And Apple's aperture is excellent, and only about £50 from the App Store, which is a bargain considering how much it can do. It may take a bit of time to learn it though.

As others have said, the big ones are Photoshop, Lightroom and PS Elements. I would try all 3 and find what's best for you.

Free version of Photoshop? Didn't know it existed!

i got one free from a friend:lol:
it came with his canon camera...he has three so he passed on the ps2 to me
its fine for me at my level
i also use oloneo photo engine, olympus master 2..i have an oly camera and it came with that, free noiseware...and for fast simple pp photofiltre..which is free

but!!!..i think i will have a go at the GIMP and to hell with the headaches
cheers

Possibly acquiring generic noun/verb status, like hoover? We'll have to wait until the op gets back, but my guess is that the `free photoshop` is whatever came with his camera.

Thanks all for the replies, sorry for late reply was out with the camera last night :D

Anyways I have been using the express editor on photoshop.com

I have heard about GIMP but never used it.

Was just wondering if I did get Elements or Lightroom or another similar editor would it take a long time to get used to as I am completely new to photography and especially editing.

Thanks

2 main reasons it had/has no RAW support and when it was first launched it was bitty with loose floating palettes and slightly unreliable.
While the interface and reliability have inproved it still has no raw compatability.
I'm not saying it's rubbish, on the contary it's very good, and the price is superb (free) but a lot of pros will still see it as a poor relation I'm afraid.
