Hi Everyone,

As a complete beginner, who has no experience of any Image Editing applications, I would appreciate any suggestions as to what would be the best to use.

Any ideas or experiences would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

this is gonna get 10 replies with 10 different suggestions.

Are you looking for something that is free (I think most people use gimp) or paid for (where most use some version of photoshop)? Depending on camera, you may find the software provided in the box is good enough for what you want to do.

I would suggest one of the newer vesions of photoshop elements, these are aimed at the inexperienced beginner but are advanced enough to continue to be usefull as your experience grows.

You can also get Adobe products (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc) at a great discount if you're a UK student, Elements isn't on the list but it's cheap enough anyway.

Try a few free ones first - you may find one of them does what you want, if not, you've lost nothing.

Photoscape, Irfanview, Paint.net and GIMP are all free.

Photoscape is very easy to use, but has more limited features than GIMP, which has loads but is more difficult to use.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replys.

I was thinking along the line of Elements, as I don't want to spend longer on a computer than with a camera, if that makes sense. Would Elements give me enough to produce good results (obviously depending on how good the original is)?

More than enough Mike .... and if / when you start using the full version of Photoshop, by having started with Elements you will be very familiar with PS already.

:agree:

Also, you have best access to camera raw files with Elements. The free programs don't support raw very well. I'd recommend elements 9 - there are some significant enhancements in processing over any earlier version.
