Just wondering how everyone goes about saving digital pictures? Do you save a copy to your hard drive every time? What kind of system do you have running?

I've found that my computer has slowed some since I have upgraded to the Nikon D50? Any suggestions, welcome.

After a day out with the camera I will do something like this...

1) Copy original files (mostly NEF, sometimes JPEG) from camera to my workstation or laptop.
2) Review the files and delete all the junk
3) What's left gets converted to jpeg (if neccessary) and resized/watermarked via a batch job in Photoshop if I intend to bulk upload to my site or I will work on individual files if I'm not uploading.
4) Archive off the files to DVD every now and again

I have around 2 Tb of diskspace at my disposal so I'm not exactly running short lol

When you say you that your PC has slowed up since you got your D50 - what do you mean exactly?

When is it slow?
What software are you running when it slows up?
What are the system specs?
Are you running XP?

I would suspect you need more RAM if you are editing photos when the PC slows down.

I have a system in place now where after my pictures have been put onto the pc, the rubbish removed and the good stuff processed, I then back up that folder to an external hard drive and periodically I also copy the folders of there to DVD storage as well.

I also check the DVD backups occasionally just incase they are becomming corrupt with time.

HTH :)

I just back up all the raw files and worked on images I've taken to DVD once a month.

Back up everything to external Hard Drive......even the rubbish.

Everything lands in one directory on the computer - I then sort through the decent stuff and that gets saved in a different directory. My backup is to copy ALL the original stuff onto CD periodically. The laptop gets regularly backed up onto the desktop machine as well as it's got a relatively small hard drive compared to the desktop.

Interesting thread. Currently I shoot RAW and JPG together although I'm not sure why yet. Probably because I have the RAW for processing and the jpgs go straight into Picasa for instant viewing for other people. However, the jury is still out on that method as I'm not sure of the wisdom of keeping duplicates of every shot.

However, all gets backed up DVD about once a month.

regards
