Hi All - I have a pretty new Imac I5 and I usually use the back power button to put it to sleep, but just recently it has developed a delay when I press the button of about 20 seconds before it sleeps. It does the same when I sleep via the Apple menu.

Has anyone had this problem or know what causes it etc?

Thanks for looking.

Isn't something to do with the PRAM? I thought resetting that was to deal with issues like ignoring requests to go to sleep/wake up/ fans funny.

I always use the menu for sleep.

USB devices can make it wake up. If something is connected then it can make it awaken suddenly. My old g5 would sometimes wake up immediately for no reason. Never did work out why.

I'm not sure what PRAM is to be honest?
I've given it a try putting to sleep via the Apple menu but still the delay.

Do you have external devices , (USB drives etc). It could be it needs to finish a task before it shuts down. I always use the menu option to put mine to sleep, it goes of almost instantaneously

Try shutting the machine down, wait a few seconds then restart. Do nothing for about a minute, so it finishes loading start up progs etc. Then put it to sleep using the menu button. Does it still hang. If it does check for activity on any external equipment.

I have 2 external HDD's attached via USB but not sure if they are actually turned on at the wall (I just back up onto them from time to time). I'll remove these and re-try.
I've restarted the machine a few times using both the back power button and via the menu and still get the delay.

Indeed it could need a PRAM/NVRAM reset.

follow the instructions here. It won't hurt to try this and get back to us

I'll give this a go when I get home later and let you know how I get on.

Cheers for the help so far guys.

Ok, I've tried the PRAM reset following the instructions and I've even removed all devices connected via USB and still the sleep delay is there. It's exactly 30 seconds every time.

Ok have you any firewire devices connected, If so remove them as well.

Also Have you Time Machine active if so switch off and see what happens.

When you removed your USB's did you just try to sleep or rebooted it first then sleep.

Try a reboot with devices unattached and then see what happens

I've shut down the mac with the USB's unplugged, turned off Time Machine and tries again. No change. :(
Not sure how to check for firewall devices?

Check start up items in Sys Prefs/ Users. See if anything you cant identify is loading at start up. if there is it may be that that's taking time to shut down. Any AV software for example. If that doesn't work, give Apple care a ring and see if they can help. I've always found them helpful and they are based in Ireland .

Cheers John. I'll have a look tonight. It's funny, as this just started happening without me installing anything, although the other half does use the Mac from time to time so who knows. :bonk:;)
