iMac monitor brightness setting

Just checking...On an Apple iMac when editing images is there an "ideal" brightness to set the monitor to...at the moment I have been editing at full brightness is this correct ?

A, probably not
B, how do your prints compare?
C, get a screen calibrator

In the control panel, there is the "display" tab where one
may create a profile and or adjust colours, gamma, and
brightness. If you never did it, go through it.

There is an other thing. The place you're working in is
possibly brighter during the day. My PP station is in a
closed area in the studio where, light wise, always the
same light conditions.

Your screen may be brighter during the day and adjusted
through the keyboard for pleasing tamed brightness at night.

I have been editing at full brightness is this correct ?

It is not incorrect for sure as your brain keeps track of all
relative tonalities. Maybe your eyes would be more happy with
a somewhat dimmer brightness at night. Again, your brain keeps
track of all relative tonalities.

The last point is printing. If you print some of your work, then testing
is the key word.

iMacs have very bright screens so the answer to you first question will more than likely be no.
My iMac is set about quarter way when profiling.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will take them on-board and test a few things out. I will also print out the images to see how they look on paper

I see nothing wrong there! Like I said:

your brain keeps track of all relative tonalities.

I will also print out the images to see how they look on paper

There will a problem right there!

Electronic publishing use transparency based media such
as screens but paper printing use reflective light.

So this will translate, in terms of luminosity, to prints some
0.33ƒ to 0.66ƒ darker than on the electronic viewing media
and that should be compensated prior to printing.
