Hi,
A little off topic but thought that I'd throw this thread out there -
I took the plunge and bought a brand new iMac with a spangly screen for my photography post processing - I unpacked and set it up etc and it will not for love nor money connect to my wireless internet - has anyone had this same problem? Does anyone have any ways of fixing this problem as Apple are really next to useless!
many thanks!

Go to System preferences / Network and the options should all be there. Macs tend to work but maybe your airport is switched off.

Are you using a BT router. I've had problems connecting a Mac to one. Wouldn't talk to it for love or money. PC no problem, even an iPhone . Used a linksys router hey presto worked a dream

Just a thought can you connect via a patch lead?

What do you mean when you say you can't connect?
Does it give errors?

What does the Airport window say?

There could be dozens of reasons. Turned the Mac on? ;)

Can you be a bit more specific?

Some routers have to be set to "discovery" mode before they will pick up a new device.

As said, can you give a bit more info?

ooh thanks for lots of replies! Rightey, iMac is switched on;), airport on, it can see the speendtouch hub (from tiscali) - it asks for the network password and keeps rejecting it saying that it is in-correct - it isn't! I've carried it though to the actual hub and connected it via the yellow ethernet cable and it works fine, however it still wouldn't accept the password (although it didn't need it with the cable)

The problem is that I cannot actually run a cable from the hub through to the room that the computer is - I've played with setting the iMac settings in Network diagnostics from WPA to WEP etc and it doesn't make a difference! I am rather computer illiterate which makes it all that more fun!
I rang Apple who made me change priorities so that the Airport is first on the list above bluetooth etc, they also made me make a new network - they also made me run the computer from the start up discs to work out if the problem is with the software - I've downloaded Leopard 10.5.5 and the Airport update for third party hubs and nothing....does any of that make any sense? Thanks for all the response so far :)

Try a '$' symbol in front of the password ;)

From a Mac user who had the same issue with airport!

That's exactly the problem I had with the BT hub, except it wouldn't connect via the ethernet cable. . Any chance of using another hub.

Does the Tiscali hub support Macs. Can't see why it shouldn't but I've had that problem several years ago. But I would have thought that would not be an issue now a days.

Have you contacted Tiscali they may have the answer

What encryption scheme is in use? needs to be the same on both the router and the mac.

You should be using wpa or wpa2 for preference.

Sometimes I've seen issues so that you need to enter the password as a hex striing rather than text. Try that.

I know its a really simple thing to overlook, so apologies if it sounds silly, but I've done this before, and so have many others I bet.

Caps lock?

Have you also tried changing the password at the hub?
Can you connect to the router at all?

My speedtouch address is http://192.168.1.254/

I agree would try the Caps Lock if it is a preset password on the router they tend to be in capitals.

If this isn't the problem would suggest you connect to the router via ethernet and run a software update by:
Going to the top left corner of the screen and clicking on the apple sign.
Then go to software up date.

Hope this helps, will keeping looking though.

This is where mine differs. I have WEP on the router and WPA on the MAC. I kept getting passord incorrect until I changed the Imac only to WPA and voila, worked in the end.

Hi, thanks once again for all of the replies -
I have been meticulous with CAPS - it wasn't a silly suggestion, it's the sort of thing that usually catches me out, lol!
I can connect to the Router via Ethernet Cable only.
I have been in touch with Tiscali who assure me that the Router (speedtouch a25100 / 580) is compatible for use with Mac.
I've tried connecting with changing preferences from WPA to WEP and all of the other WEP initials after it and I am feeling thoroughly ignorant!
How would I change a password to a Hex String?
I have tried using the $ symbol infront of the password and then sandwiching it and the connection just times out apparantly - all other times it's stating incorrect password
As for software updates I have installed them for the server (Leopard OSX 10.5.4 upto 5.5) and also I found one for enabling the Airport extreme to connect to other third party networks -
Now how would I set about fiddling with the Hub?
So sorry for the ineptitudes but all posts are gratefully received thanks!

PLug the cable in and go to the IP I gave above, and log in.

My speedtouch is a 780 and defaults to

Administrator / no password

Im not sure if all speedtouches are the same though.

Have you had anything else connected to the wireless router?

There is a good chance the password must be 5 or 13 digits.

Stop pulling your hair out and seriously consider a new wireless router, you should be able to pick one up quite cheaply ( less than £50). Well worth it if you get rid of the hassle with the Tiscali one.
I have used netgear ( simplest) and Belkin, both just work. My Dad has Tiscali and had problems getting the router to work, he bought a netgear and was online in a few minutes.

I dont think you can blame Apple, my Dad was onto Tech support at Tiscali for hours and they couldnt figure out what was wrong with the router
