I've a mate at work that has Lightroom 5 running okay on his ageing iMac - he's thinking of upgrading to one of the new versions - we got talking and he's not decided yet re 21" or 27" - but I seem to remember reading that with the retina screens lightroom was very slow to load / work ...

Does anyone know if this applicable to lightroom 5 or just the newer version (CC)

Does anyone know if the issues apply to the 21" retina or was it just the 27" ?

Cheers
A

I have a new 27" retina and run LR CC. I don't have any speed issues as long as I turn off GPU acceleration.

Thanks - he has LR 5 and don't think he's looking to change presently.

When you say turn off GPU acceleration - is that in LR CC or on the iMac ?

Cheers

I'm on LR CC and it seems to perform faster with GPU switched on on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015).

Thanks guys

I'll pass the info on if he opts to upgrade LR as well...

What do you mean by 'GPU switched on' please.
In Lightroom CC, there's a preference setting to enable/disable GPU usage.

Whilst I've found using the GPU is faster, it seems to be causing the occasional Lightroom hang so I've switched it off for the time being.

My new 5k (my first ever Apple computer) runs LR no problem. No issues here.

i run Lightroom CC on 27Inch Retina using 295X VGA processor and its fine. No different than running it on my Windows machine..and i dont disable anything.

Thanks.

I think he's taking the plunge in a month or so - waiting to see what the new / upgrade version is (if any).

I had a look at one the other day and must say, interested in getting one now.

The only thing thats disappointing about 5k retina is that I always thought that 12mpx camera will have enough pixels for everything. Now my D700 can't even produce a wallpaper for my desktop :)

Editing photos at 5120×2880 resolution is great I don't need to zoom in/out all the times like on low-res screen.

It might be wise to make him aware that if he upgrades to a Mac running macOS Sierra 10.12 (the latest version released a few days ago) he may well encounter problems with Lightroom 5.

Details from Adobe
.

He may have to also upgrade to the latest version of Lightroom (currently Lightroom CC 2015.7/Lightroom 6.7).

Oh okay thanks for that - any reason ?

Obviously a new Mac will come with it installed.

Rumour Mill says new Macs in October. Not sure if the iMac will be updated but hints of possible MacBookPro upgrades. May be worth hanging on to see if the iMac is updated.

It could be a gamble though. Almost certainly UK price of Macs will see similar increase as this year's iPhone.

Given by there will be likely no new CPUs and the only hope for iMac 27" refresh is updated (or just rebadged) GPU and new interfaces it might not be worth waiting...

It's a consideration, but then if they do upgrade it slightly - you could order the current version on line (if quick) so hopefully not loosing out.

Anyway not my money (at the moment anyway) [emoji3]

Had a quick look on line and there does seem to be bugs with LR 5 and Sierra.

Reads that Adobe won't (probably) be releasing any updates / fixes for it either...
