I'm trying to recreate this lighting

Its really directional but with soft edges.. have a play with Fresnel spot

The Marlene Detich shot is B&W, probably with a red filter, defo on film

I don't have a beauty dish.

I have 2 halogen modeling lamps and 2 flash lamps that has outer covers, umbrella, barn door, gels, snoot, reflectors.

I am good with photoshop and have already converted it to B&W.

I placed the lights right in front of the model (very close) one from above and one from below.

I'm not too worried about lighting the back of the head.

The original is 2 maybe three lights.

It's almost a halo effect hi-light around the subject. Your shot looks like on one light and not high enough power setting.

I would use a large softbox facing subject s chin to light under jaw an front and it will cover forehead area. The second is higher and above, aimed at back of crown area on her head.

Then move and increase/decrease power to suit what you are after.

did you say you want the background white?
but can't get it so perfect white.
Or did you mean the hi-Lights on the subject? Just position the lights in those areas and increase the power settings to where you are happy with the result.

Thanks Daryl,

I seem to get areas too well lit like the forehead and nose. I can't seem to get it smooth overall. I have tried a softbox at a low power and still get the same result.

I was using 2 lights, but will try three.
