I don't know why it wasnt one of the first things I did when I decided to become a photographer. I dont think I fully understood it and im not sure I still do. Im not really too bothered about people commenting on my photos because if I want crit I just post them on here. But is it good for other things. Free promotion? Get your work recognised? Or is it just too damn big? Id like your thoughts on this please. :)

I use one for a number of reasons.

I have a lot of my family on there and its an easy ways to share pictures with the other members of my family. I also use it for hostin for thread pictures. Its also nice to get your pictures out there for others to see and comment on them.

I've been on flickr for sometime. I have had plenty of feed back, made lots of friends. It has also got me published twice (including a feature on my photography in a magazine) and I have over 25,000 views todate of my images. Apart from the fact it can be timeconsuming I can't think of a single drawback.

I have set up an account but cannot get to grips with it. When uploading pictures many if not most have a problem uploading:shrug:

Going to give Pbase a try I think.

I've made a lot of friends and contacts through flickr. Definitely comes in handy. I'm still amazed as to how many people have not even heard of the site before.

Hi devitt. You shouldn't have any problems uploading to flickr. What happens?

Although I have my main website I always use my Flickr. Its very easy to use and considering its free, whats to lose. I have a pro account which costs very little but it comes with an endless amount of storage memory.

Mark:)

Not sure tbh. I select the ones I want to upload and most won't. Comes up with a red warning triangle after it has completed the upload of some of them. Id say 50-70% of them didn't upload on each try. I tried it ages ago and it didn't work, so set up a new account again to try a month or so ago and the same thing happened:shrug:

You could try using the software that is available instead of uploading through the browser? It could just be your net connection stumbling with the heavy upload.

Thanks, will give that a try, downloading as I type:thumbs:

I like it just for uploading my photos and sharing with friends. That's about it really.

This is interesting. Have any more of you got work or things published through flickr?

Flickr is a pretty good way of getting your work seen by others. Whether or not this leads to any kind of revenue/further publication is probably a moot point.

However, to get the most out of flickr you need to make sure you add your photos to relevant groups if you want people to see them.

Just adding keywords and hoping they will find it won't work.

Flickr is all about groups and how many contacts you have... that is how you become a "flickr-whore" :D

Well done, but did you get paid for it?

On this occasion, no, as it was all voluntary contributions. I'm not that commercially minded when it comes to my photography, but if I were, I think having contacts through the papers and magazines that use Flickr could be beneficial.

I have had one for a while, also use Photobucket which free

Also, I've found Flickr to be a great way to meet like-minded people in the virtual and real world.

I'm a fan of flickr, lets me stay in touch with friends when travelling, and most recently it provides me with a home to host pictures, to then be able to display on forums such as this. You might be able to get hosting for pictures cheaper, but the uploading tools are brilliant and the community is great.

I like Flickr because it's a good social tool and also gives me inspiration and CC too :)

I just use Flickr as a host site for pics I want to link to. I know that barely scratches the surface of wahat it can do for me but that's all I want from it. I keep all my pics private so only I can see them but can post them using the [ img]pic url[/ img] method.

Yes Rogden, have both, but I find Photobucket so much easier to use.

I have a flickr pro account works a treat, I upload from the interface an ACDSEE phot editing software.

I'm not sure about flickr. It's great for sharing pictures with friends, but these days everyone seems to think having a flickr account makes you a pro photographer. I personally think it's detrimental to the business of photography, but I won't go into that here...

Spot on.

To answer your other question, it has lead to a number of paid published shots for me.

You'll probably find that the reason you're having problems uploading is because of the file size. There's either a 4 or 5mb limit on each image when you're uploading. I just downsize to around 3mb max, and a lot of time just resize them for use on here (800 max side length and max kb size) so that I can place them straight in. Otherwise you can only link in medium size images on here which often doesn't do the shots justice.

well b****r me, if i hadn't looked in this thread.... :D

flickr is great, been on some time - love the community.

No go on Mike, please do tell...

i'd be interested in your thoughts on that - wasn't going to say anything, but what's the harm?

How does FliKr stand for image theft?

Being one of the biggest photo sharing sites, it has to be ripe for plucking for more unscrupulous characters, surely??

I think that is my only concern with using it.

Well, if you stick your images out there electronically you stand a chance of being ripped...

Flickr allow you to set a maximum size visible to anyone but your friends, which at least stops any decent prints being made.

that's a given, there are unscrupulous folk - i'd say folks on flickr are genuine, anything online is searchable, so even a pro website can have it's images taken you just have to risk it right? to be seen, noticed and make business?

Flickr is a wonderful photo sharing website in my experience. Last year I was invited to join a local 'group' and over time this group has grown and grown and we now go on regular monthly photo walks with as many as 25 people turning up. Also, there is an internet based 'camera club' on there which organises entires into UK exhibitions, so if you are going for your BPE stars there is no easier way IMO.

My one and only gripe with FlickR, even with a "pro" account, is that it always shows the last uploads first. I can't control what's on the front page, if I could I'd only have "sets" shown, or maybe pick a number of images for the front page.

Other than that, it's a very good medium for getting your images hosted and allowing friends etc to view them.

Steve

I think you can can't you? There's an organise function that lets you move things around?

You can organise sets & collections, but uploads are shown by "last first", if you get what I mean....
