Hello all, well I have been lurking around for a while now, and been reading up on different camera techniques and which cameras might suit me, well today I went into Jessops and got myself a Canon 400D also got a 2gb card and uv lens.

Will no doubt be asking quite a few questions, and will also post some pics when I manage to work this thing to take some. :D:D

Hey thanks everyone for the kind words, went out with the camera for a bit today, just played about with different settings, does anyone have any recommendations on what accessories I may need.
I know I will need a tripod ( even if it is a cheaper one to start with) also I need a bag for it as just now I dont have anysort of bag at all, anyone recommend a good bag site?

Also the hot shoe... it doesnt have a cap on it, is this ok, with the sensors ( not sure if thats what they are) get damages.?

Hey, I joined the 400D club yesterday as well ;) We rock :D

Not had chance to take it out yet mind :(

Good choice
First accessory I got was a spare battery ;)

Getting a new camera is brilliant. I just got my first DSLR on Friday, Lens yesterday so as you can imagine everybody is getting annoyed with me! I opted for a used 20D instead, I've already ordered 2 spare batteries and on the hunt for a fast as hell, cheap CF card! When you figure out how to use yours, please let me know!

hi again, well i went out on sunday to take a couple photos and play with my new toy, still trying to figure out even the basics, but here are a couple of photos that i took on my outing. please be nice. lol.

Looks good to me, especially that second one :D

Hello welcome!! nice shots i like the 1st image has a nice effect to it :)

If those are your first efforts then you're going to produce some stunning images, nice work!

Chris,

Welcome to the forums, you've bought a great camera and you appear to know how to use it.

I do like the effect of the flowing water from the long shutter speed. Although I think you do really need a tripod as I detect some softness from what I'm guessing is camera shake in the first one (not suprising really as it must have been a very long shutter speed for hand holding). If I was being picky I would say that I'm a bit put off by the rather flat colours in both and the grey boring sky in the second shot.

However, as others have said as these are some of the first you've taken then I think you are in for a very good future - I wish my first photos were this good!!

A truly great start there Chris, well done - love the composition on that second picture!

You need a tripod for sure. People may recommend you get an expensive one straight away, which would be fine. Personally I would suggest that in your position, get yourself a fairly cheap one so that you won't feel you have wasted stacks of cash should your new hobby not take off as you currently believe it will! You can always sell it and get a few pounds back in a year or so and cash in on a more sturdy one. Also, you may find you particularly enjoy taking still life and indoor / macro shots more, in which case you will find a reasonably cheap and cheerful tripod up to the job most of the time.

Don't worry about a cover for your hotshoe. You will get no problems.

And again - welcome to the 400d gang! :boxer:

Hey nice start. The first one kinda can't make its mind up between a soft flow and an action-stopping pic.... it's cool

thanks so much everyone for the comments, all been taken onboard, think my next bit of kit will be a tripod and bag,

i cant remember the exact shutter speed for the first photo but it wasnt that long, as the water was ruching so fast, and in the second one there wasnt much of a sky that day, i hear that there are certain filters that can bring out the details in the sky, might have to look into that sometime.

thanks again everyone for the comments, it means alot.

Great start Chris, looks like you are getting to grips with the camera quite quickly.
I like both shots.

When you buy anything remember that the real cost of it is the difference between what you buy it for and what you sell it for. A Manfrotto 190XPROB legs set may cost you £85 new but it will last you for years and when you come to sell it you should still be able got get most of that back. A year old 190PROB (without the easy to use center column) has just sold on ebay for £62.95 with £8 postage. Therfore the true cost to the original owner is £30 for a year's use, and it's probably got at least onther 5 years+ to go.

Hi, I am a new 400D user as well. Like you this is my first DSLR as well. So as a fellow nooby I have found this....
-The camera battery lasts for ages. I have been out for well over 3-4 hours taking landscape shots (lots of them in the cold) and the battery is just fading when I get home. But I wouldnt want to risk it failing an missing that shot or sun rise/set.
-Yesterday a Parakeet landed in my Garden much to my suprise and I went to my bag, got my lens on and guess what...the battery was dead!! gutted.
- My memory card holds 100's of large/medium shots. BUT recently while covering a match for the local team my 2gb card filled up 3 minutes from the end at 1-1 !! and I wanted to catch the final whistle emotions and couldnt unless I went through some photos and deleted them......not good!!
-Get a big bag. Dont just buy a bag to fit the camera as I found when you need to go on an away day with your camera you could do with some extra room for a 2nd lens, additional battery, filters, memory card, lens hood etc.
-I use a jessops 19.99 tri-pod and a Jessops 14.99 monopod (sport) and I have never had any problems. I also dont mind leaving them somewhere while I run off to get "that shot" as they are not that expensive if they got damaged or stolen!!!
-A polarising filter brings out the blue in water and the sky and protects your lens as well. It can be adjusted. I think I paid about 17.99 in Jessops again.
-If you are shooting sport use the AI Servo Focus mode as its excellent.
-The "beeps" the camera make when auto focus'ing can distract an animal or scare a bird....as ive found out, but you can turn it off in the menu!!
-The B&W shoot mode is excellent and ive had some brilliant results.
-cant think of any more yet but if you fancy a chat just drop me a PM.

Im sorry if im stating the obvious but as a nooby too thought it would help in some way!!

hi shrimperblue, thanks for that, as for tri-pod.. its ordered, went for one off of 7dayshop, i feel the same about not spending too much on a ti-pod at this stage. i also ordered a bag today. says it will hold 1 camera body , two lenses and accessories.so should be big enough for me just now.

will be going out again at the weekend to take some more shots and learn the different modes. ( so much to try and learn) just working my way through the setting, still getting used to P mode.

feel free to pm me at any time. and thanks again for the info. would also like to see some of your shots sometime.
