But could anyone recommend me a cheapish lens!

A little info, I'm getting a 400D for christmas (huzzah :woot:). However scince I don't really want to be stuck with just the kit lens, I've got around a £300 budget to buy a couple of lens's.
I've done some research and one lens that sticks out immediately is the 50mm f/1.8 which is very cheap, so I think I'll definately get that. I'm having trouble finding a lens with a range around 70-200 for the remaining price though and it would be great if anyone could recommend me something!

Thanks in advance, Luke.

Also there is the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro DG which is available with a canon mount for about £155 from warehouse express. Like birdy says, you get what you pay for. Its a nice enough lens, but not top end quality, that will serve you well enough until that 'L' glass can be purchased ;)

If you're looking for something cheap yet decent on the telephoto end, I'd suggest a Sigma 70-300 mm APO DG macro. There's a similar Tamron model which is cheaper, but it usually suffers from a bit more of CA and purple fringing in the whole range than the Sigma, some say it's a little sharper, though. The Tamron is also lighter by about a 100 g.
There's also the 55-200 mm group of cheap lenses, but the 70-300 mm are more practical, for me anyway.

Hi Lukey and welcome to TP

The nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8) and 70-300 combo is a fine starting point. A similar thread came up yesterday, in fact, and there's some example shots with the 70-300 in there from a couple of folk. Here's one of mine with the nifty fifty, showing the depth of field achievable:

nifty fifty - agreee
Sigma 70-300 - must be APO version

That and the kit lens allows you to have a stab at most things, to get started. After a while you'll figure out what you like taking photos off best and you can fine tune your lens purchases, but this will cover most eventualities really quite well as often good technique can overcome other problems.

If it was my 300 quid then I'd abandon the 50/1.8....your kit lens will cover that adequately and find myself a 70-200 f/4L......you're right in the ballpark pricewise.

Thanks, all this advice it's very helpful :D.

I think I've decided on getting the 50mm f/1.8 and either one of these lenses:

Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG APO Macro

or

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III DC Lens

If anyone could give me a nudge in the right direction out of these two I'll forever worship you!:notworthy:

I bought my Sigma 70-300mm that I used constantly until I got my beloved 70-200 L after seeing a review in one or other photo mag when it outperformed everything else in the class that they put it up against. That certainly included the Canon equivalemtn of the time, although I can't tell you whether subsequent refinements to that Canon equivalent might have changed things.

I can tell you though that you won't be disappointed in the "nifty fifty" and nor, I believe, would you be in that Sigma. :)

:notworthy: That's been a brill help many thanks! Also I'd like to apologise for so many questions, but I'm kind of an inquisitive person!:D

Another vote for the Sigma 70-300 from me:thumbs: For the price it's a very good lens. Only got rid of mine when I got my Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX:love:

The best suggestion yet which has been totally overlooked.:|

And yes you have yourself an L glass lens and one of the sharpest lenses available.;) and both ranges covered.:)
