I'm sure you hate new film wannabee's but... :-D

If you accidentally let go when rewinding a film and it goes spinning... is it ruined :'(

If the film winding handle goes spinning, no

If the entire camera starts to revolve and creates a vortex that grows and grows until it sucks half of europe into itself... probably yes :)

I didnt notice any vortex type things, so im guessing it was the film winding handle...

Sorry, but this made me giggle.......

Lol it's ok i am now but at the time the look of horror on my face thinking "oh noooooooooooooooooooooo":lol:

There should not be very much tension, did you remember to press the button on the base plate to dis-engage the winding mechanism?

i did press the button yes... there felt reasonable tension i guess. but i have nothing to compare it with so as it right or wrong i have no clue... there was no film showing when i opened the back,

I guess we'll find out once Rob gets it and see how laughable my first try was:lol:

serious answer

there can actually be quite a bit of "backlash" from the wound up film on certain cameras if the film hasn't quite disengaged from the take-up spool. With practice, you actually get to "feel" when the "leader" of the film disengages the spool, so you can slow down winding and avoid the (sometimes folded) leader entering the film canister, being wound round half a dozen times and potentially scratching the underlying film.

Some of the later 35mm cameras actually came with a setting to rewind the film "leader out" which really made it easy for home processing of the film, as you didn't have to faff about in the darkroom or changing bag to "crack open" the film canister and snip the film leader off before winding into the developing spool.

oh god .... there should be some film showing shouldn't there from the cannister??

No it's ok if there isn't, it's just when developing yourself it's nice to leave the leader out so you don't have to faff around with scissors in the dark (you chop the leader off prior to loading into a developing tank and put nice chamfered corners on the remaining film)

Not an issue.

It would be an issue if there were 3 feet of film showing from the cannister though!

yeah, ^^^ wot he said - sorry to worry you un-necessarily.

actually, the "leader out" can be a problem in itself - it's NOT unheard of for someone to put a exposed (but leader out) film back into the camera and shoot another 36 over the first one...

not that I've done that.

Oh No, not me

(not for at least... oooh... 15 years or so, anyway!)

Some days you got to love 120 with its big print and sticky label all say EXPOSED!!!

Ah ok i can relax!... honestly i didn't think loading and un loading film could be so stressful.... I was worried Rob was going to curse and kick me!

Mark it's ok. it's kinda good to hear of what's good or bad and possibilities etc

So what you are saying is i need to get used to it, there is always something?... in all honesty i have really enjoyed shooting my first roll, loved it and now need to go and choose some more films to start seeing what i like best, although waiting to see what this one comes back like i will be sensible and just get some cheap ones first:D

well - having looked through your gallery, all I can say is... you're going to love Kodak Portra...

You have me intrigued, what results does it achieve? ( and don't say like your gallery lol :p)

edit i just had a quick google search and yes i can totally see myself using that, some of those results are right up my street! ...excited!

it's got that slightly gentle, almost pastel kind of feel to it, that's all... it does what it says on the box really - they called it "Portra" for a reason - portrait film if ever I saw it.

(I can't get on with it, but that's because I'm a grumpy old golfbag who works on the principle of "if I'd have wanted to shoot people, I'd have joined the army")

T, I've had that problem with the spinning rewind lever many many times, as I find the wee lever on the ME quite hard to grip. And then sometimes the button underneath doesn't stay in so you need a finger there to keep it pressed... but you get there in the end.

Why not grab yourself a few rolls of Agfa Vista from Poundland, cheapest option and not a bad film at all.

+1 for Portra, the 160 and 400 versions both offer very fine grain, and have an exceptional amount of latitude (either can be overexposed by up to 3 stops, or underexposed by up to 2 with only minimal degradation of image quality). It really does show the beautiful results that you can get with film.

I'm not even sure what happened whether i just lost the grip or went to try and hold it better... the button on the bottom if that doesn't stay in does it stop it being able to wind? at least i know now for next time...

a few rolls of agfa vista is certainly on the cards until i know what i'm doing, i quite like the look of some of the results looking in the thread for it.. but now mark has mentioned the kodak portra i really do have to try that as well:D

Portra is generally only available in "bricks" of 5, and the 35mm Portra 400 seems to be well north of £30 in most places... :(

Discount Films Direct and 7dayshop sell Porta in singles as far as I know; if theres a branch of Calumet nearby you then B&W Kodak Tmax 100/400 and Tri-X 400 can be got fairly cheap if you order online, and then pick up from the shop.

How much?! Sorry kids you can go without food next week:lol:

I'm out in the sticks so any town i go to is a good 13 miles away, i'll probably look online and see what deals i can get

I've seen a couple of threads recently and the last one i was too slow, i've put the film classies in as watch forum/thread thingy now.... dangerous! lol

Agfa vista is a steal. Quid a roll. Poundland are dirt cheap for lots of things. Could get the kids Christmas presents from there and spend the rest on film ;)

You're right it does convert well, although the colour version is lovely, it'd be silly not to go and grab a few rolls at the price whilst i find my feet, at least then it doesn't matter if i make some serious f ups!

Funnily enough that thought had crossed my mind! :D

Nice, I like them..... wish I had a Poundland near me.....

You don't have a poundland? i can get you some if you like, when i get mine

Lol... not where I live.
The nearest Poundland is 40 minutes away.....
If it's not too much trouble for you, that would be great, thank you.

Another vote here for the agfa quid film.................i've picked a number of rolls up on my last visits to the UK; The colours aren't bad at all imo, it will cross process ok in b&w chems albiet the results need an umph of contrast in pp and I also found out to my surprise that it will give an acceptable result pushed 3 stops to 1600 iso and devd in rodinal.

I'm full of useless info so there you have some, if you do plan on deving at home and experimenting at some point.

Think I need to save up, so's I can give home developing a try...it sounds like it'll be fun

@Asha even though i have been hissy fitting today at unloading the film and cursing, i do think at some point i would love to give developing a try, although i pity you poor buggers listening to me stressing and what kind of mess i get myself into:lol:
