Hey guys, had some great help before on this, but I'm still a bit stuck. I've decided to go for flash guns, stands, gels and some accessories, but I don't know what make or anything. I use Nikon stuff so ideally fancy the SB900's but they're a bit pricey, can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative? Bear in mind I'll need a high guide number (?) as its for interior architecutural stuff and want to be able to shoot a variety of small and large places.

Also I'd like 2 flash guns, stands, gel sets, etc- I can only find kits for monoheads, anyone know of any flash gun kits?

And whats better for interiors? I've had lots of people tell me soft boxes and umbrellas but which one?! Or one of each?

Thanks for any help :)

If you're shooting off camera then save yourself some pennies and get a couple of Yongnuo YN560s. A single one bounced from the ceiling in an average sized room will be enough, but obviously for anything creative youwill need more.

Yeah I was considering the Nissins, how about the Nissin Di622 MkII Speedlite? Its more my budget at the minute as I'd like to buy 2. I've heard they don't work with remote triggers though, how would I fire off multiple flashes? (I'm new to flash if you couldn't tell...)

Also, I've heard guide numbers are the thing to look for in flash, this one has a max guide number of 44- that good?

I've also seen this flash accessory kit, does it look good value?

I've got two Di466 flash guns and have used them successfully as optical slaves. I've just got a set of ebay triggers and will be trying them with them shortly. I'll update you when I've given it a go.

Thanks very much! I'm quite confused by this idea of slaves, without a trigger system do they just use your in built flash? If so that can't be great, as I hate my in built flash..... Or am I just totally off track?

When used as optical slaves the nissins fire when the photocell detects the main flash. They've got 2 slave modes, 1 which fires when it first detects a flash and a second which ignores the digital pre flash and fires on the second flash.

I used my 580ex flash in manual mode set on minimum to fire the off camera flashes. Because the 580 was set so low it doidn't affect the exposure.

Another vote for the nissin guns here, I have the 866 though. Very very powerful flash :-)

Re gels and stuff, I use the honl kit.... Not cheap, but quick and simple.

Ok so I'm definately going for Nissin, thinking of getting one for now and getting another one later on. Am I right in thinking the Nissin Di622 MKII can be fired via radio triggers? Meaning your in-built flash doesn't have to be fired?

If so I reckon thats how I'll start out, just wondered if someone could clear some stuff up?

How powerful is this flash gun compared to a Nikon SB900?
How much creative control do you have over it?
Would it be a good benefit for interior photography?
And the stands they come with, do they by any chance fit a lighting stand?

Thanks in advance, if I don't get many replies I'll repost with a more specific subject, I'm just so ready to buy now!

Im presuming the 866 is the same, but the stand that comes with the 622 is just a plastic foot. I'm presuming youll need a separate gizmo to mount it on a stand? (Though to be fair, ive never tried!)

Why make life so difficult? A lot of interiors can be shot very successfully with ambient light and a decent tripod. A single tungsten light hand held can be good for painting with light too. You don't need masses of radio kit/flashes you don't know how to use - keep it simple and you will up your success rate.

TIP: ask the people who are advising you to buy all the gear to show you some pics they've taken with a similar set up. Then you'll find out if it's hot air or not!
