Not leaving the forum, just the country :) I came back from 10 months in Canada last year, hoping things had improved back here in the UK. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem that way so I've been applying for permanent residency in New Zealand and just got notice that I'm through the first stage! So pretty buzzing about that! Apparently the whole process takes around 5-6 months so I've still got some time to go, but just wanted to share my (hopefully!) good news!

Leaving sounds like a good idea! I don't usually indulge in doom and gloom, but as an economist I have reason to of late... I don't know if there are any other FT readers here, but for those of you who know of Jim Rogers (Quantum Fund), he states:

"The pound is a currency with no underpinning and should fall against the dollar and the euro, says Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings and co-founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros."

"...the two main pillars of support for sterling have been North Sea oil and the strength of the UK financial services sector, in particular, the City of London’s role."

“The City of London is finished, the financial centre of the world is moving east.”

UK’s dire economic situation: “It’s simple, the UK has nothing to sell.”

Cited from here.

Would the last one out turn off the lights?

...nah... I don't think its that bad really... if you don't believe me, click here.

All that aside, I wish you good luck for your new life 'down under'.

There are lots of beautiful black swans in New Zealand.

An old work friend of mine left the Army late last year and moved to NZ and says it's the best decision he's ever made. I'll be following him shortly I think :)
