Hi all, my name is Cheryl. I have always loved photography as a hobby but now after 3 children i'd like to start a career.
As a mom I've paid to have tonnes of photos done professionally of my kiddies and if I'm honest ripped off in some cases! I have done a few of my own over the years but always wanted to learn more!

Well my partner got me a canon dslr a few months back so while I'm still a full time mom I've decided to start learning again. I've done 2 short courses so far and got another 8 week course starting in April & eventually I'd love to do a degree?

There are so many things I want to learn and ask but feel silly sometimes so I'm hoping to get some advice & make some new friends along the way.

Welcome to TP Cheryl. Sounds like you have the motivation and drive to learn so that's a great start to improving.

Dont be afraid to ask what you feel may be daft questions. Lots have people have asked what they feel were daft questions, but if you dont ask, you never find out.

Just ask away and someone will have the answer. We aint such a bad bunch really and most of us dont bite :D

Thanks for replying, I am really excited about learning but had a few set backs already! My first course got cancelled a few weeks in due to poor numbers on the course, so then I signed up for the city & guilds course through ics home learning but after receiving the documents and logging into their forums I saw the bad comments about the course and it's tutors. So I then contacted my tutor and a few students already on the course, never heard back from the tutor or ics customer services plus all the reviews were bad so had a full refund.

Now I'm stuck because I'm itching to learn but not many courses about until September! There are a few night ones but my partner works nights so no child care for me.

Here goes a few if my silly questions, I use my camera in av settings

What setting I'd best for portraits? I've been using 5.6 but this is more for blurred background isn't it? I try to keep my iso low but shutter speed of 1/60 or more is that right??

I've got a backdrop kit with muslin but I find it a complete nightmare to iron so is paper better?

Roughly when taking my shots where does my child need to be ( how far away from backdrop) as I don't want to see the creases!

I use Lightroom & ps3 to edit has anyone got a tips?

Also pricing? Must add though I am NOT starting my business until the end of 2013 when ive learnt more & have qualifications but I've had a few people ask for prices already but have no idea where to start!

Some people say I may be silly asking all this now but I have a big book that I write all my notes in and I refer back to it.

I have also contacted 3 local photographers explaining about myself & asked if I could meet and watch them work for experience but I'm sure they think I'm a stalker or mad woman???

The good news is that you have some good questions there. The bad news is you have posted them in the wrong part of the forum. You are much more likely to get expert advice if you post the questions in the right part of the forum.

For your questions on taking portraits, go to the Talk People and Portraits section and the Talk Lighting and studio section.

For the question on Lightroom and PS3 go to Post Processing and Image Editing

For the question on pricing, go to Talk Business

Also take a look at Talk Basics as some of what you need may have been asked here and reading through this part of the forum is a good grounding
