:) Hi,

I'm new and wanting to learn photography. I am starting with basics, so SLR camera non-digital. I was wondering if some of you can help me because my mum bought the camera for me with a french manual, and i dont understand it...

Anyone got any tips - I really want to learn how to blurr the background when focusing on the main object (e.g a flower.)

Or even like using the camera to take pictures of animals - obviously the fast speed etc.

Welcome to the Forums, I think you'd be better off posting for help in the Talk photography forum and list what camera and lenses you have.
 
Hi Rachel, and welcome to the forums :)

Basically the effect you required for the blurred background with the main object "popping out" of the photo, is by using what's called a narrow "Depth of Field".

Basically depth of field is a term used to describe how much "front to back" of your photo is in focus.

For example, with a photo of a flower.....if just the flower is in focus, and the background out of focus, this is said to have a narrow/shallow depth of field.
If the flower is in focus and the background is also in focus, this is said to have a large depth of field.

The depth of field is mainly controlled by setting the aperture on the camera (the f number...eg f/2.8.. f/4....f/11 etc)
f/2.8 (and the low numbers) will open up the aperture in your lens, and give you a narrow/shallow depth of field (the effect you required), while "Stopping down" (Selecting a larger number, say, f/11, or f/16), means much more of the photo will be in focus :)
