Hi everyone,
I'm completely new to photography and though i have been very interested in art for years have decided to give going behind the camera a go. I'm also starting art college in a few weeks and need an slr camera for my course.

I'm completely lost on which camera to buy... I want a camera which will take impressive photos but will also allow me to grow into as if this really turns into a passion for me (which i'm certain it will) that I can use for professional photos.

I have a budget of around £300 and am not averse to buying second hand... have trawled ebay but it just all seems so confusing.... I have looked at the Canon a350 and also the Nikon d40... any suggestions, i'd be go glad of the advice!!

Hi I'm also new to ohotography and I have a nikon D3000 camera. It cost 350 from Jessops although they had a sony on at 299 but I was told the nikon is a better place to start. I've found the guide mode feature handy as you can set it to pretty much exactly what you want and can adjust it accordingly. Having said that though I've taken a few pictures on here and been shot down in flames for the quality. An annoying thing about it though is that you can only use the actual eyepiece to view the image as opposed to the screen too but that takes a bit of getting used to.

Having said that I'd recommend it to anyone so I daresay if you look on ebay etc you may well find one at a reasonable price?

Hope this helps

Ryan

Nikon D40 is an excellent camera, can certainly recommend.

Have a look around the net and you'll see plenty of positive reviews.

I've got the D40 and it's a great camera to start with. Plenty of lens choice and basic enough to learn about the different functions.

thanks guys, that has been so helpful... really appreciate you getting back to me... sounds like nikon is the way to go!

I had a 350D for about 4 years and it never let me down but there are excellent cameras a fewc years old from all the main manufacturers all of which you will be able to grow into if the inevitable happens and you get hooked by the wonderful bug that is photography

i bought a nikon d40 today..... very excited.

it has a standard 18-55mm lens and comes boxed, it has only taken approx 30 pictures and was an unwanted gift. i got it for £225 which i think is a good price.

do you think i should invest in a bigger lens, i was looking at one which would take me to 200mm.....????

this is all so new to me, i also bought nikon d40 for dummies of amazon, think it sort of sums me up

I'd recommend getting used to the 18-55mm and the camera and focus on what you take pictures of most and then buy a lens according to that really

Best thing is to go out and experiment! I would recommend a lens, but I'm not a Nikon user

I started with the D40 ............a great camera
stay with it and learn before the next step

the 18-55 lens is quite good enough at 18mm for landscapes - BUT buy a good tripod

now moved up to a D5000
did consider the D90 and the D200.....but you will make your own decision based on YOUR experience/requirements when the time comes

enjoy !! ps recommend the D40 book by David Busch from Amazon
