Ive got a cannon 400d and my girlfriends sister is getting married in april and i'd like to be able to get some nice pics at it..

Currently i have the standard 18-55 lens.. i used this for my cous one time a couple of months ago and the 18-55 ment i had to get up close to got any kind of detail so i thought if i get a longer lens i wont have to be as close. im still in the learning phase but ive managed to get some cracking pics with my 18-55 lens but just want a different lens for this wedding.

Can anyone point me in the rite direction..? have a budget of 100 - 150 to get this.. not even sure if its a realsitic budget.

Many thanks

Sean

A good lens to accompany your 18-55 would be the 55-250 and you would get it in budget. I bought one last summer to use at my granddaughters wedding and between them I was able to cover most situations, even indoors without flash.

I bought the 55-250mm just after Christmas, not for any particular occasion but merely because I wanted a bit of extra reach when photographing events, as I can relate to feeling distant with the 18-55 in some environments. I have to say as value for money goes, the 55-250mm is great, it now sits on my camera almost permanently!

THERE yer go! £150 all in, brand new.
Not enough posts to buy from the forum yet due to new ruling.
Belter of a lens, shoots well above it's price.

Thats good to know..

Been having a look about and i just missed one for 115 in the for sale section..

How much did you pick yours up for matt?

Well if you are able to see the FS threads, how about THIS one?
Seems a bargain to me!

Yep! Get one from ebay for about 4-6 quid!
MUCH safer buying lens from here, then look on ebay, or even Amazon for your hood!
Simples!

It's still for sale! Try an offer on the thread, you never know!
Or are you not interested anymore?

The Canon 50mm 1.8 mkII sounds like a fantastic lens to buy on a budget. I'm quite sure you can purchase from them a TP supplier for £80 delivered. Read up on reviews or check out video reviews on youtube of it, I know Digital Rev review it.

I thought the op was looking for a longer lens than the 18-55 kit lens? The 50 1.8 isn't gonna be much help surely?

Thats what i thought .. is the 50 .18 not be better for closer shots?

The 50mm 1.8 is a cheap way of getting a fast lens with pretty decent image quality. I think they are great for portrait and shallow depth of field shots but not ideal as a wedding guest as you would have to spend alot of time moving about with this lens.

There will be a lot of people about so im thinking the longer lens will be a better buy for me.. also will use it when i go to car shows for the live action bit.

Have taken pics before and i couldnt help thinking when looking at them that i wish i had of been closer or had a longer lens.

If you are shooting inside or in poor light you will struggle with anything but fast glass, a nifty fifty or a 85mm f1.8 and leg zoom would be much more useful.

I reckon the 55-250mm lens would be ideal. It gets great reviews and seems like good value for money. The IS is pretty useful but bear in mind that it won't eliminate subject movement. The 50mm f/1.8 is a nice lens, but you've already got the focal length covered and you don't seem to have a complaint about low light shooting so you could probably live without it for now.

Flash is always an option, unless it's not allowed (just realised how stupid that makes me sound but you know what I mean).

I agree with the fast prime idea. 50mm 1.8 sounds perfect for weddings for getting some nice portraits and action shots.

so this 50mm means that it doesnt zoom?

Does my 18 - 55 not cover me in that or is this a different thing all together?

The 50mm is a prime lens, it dosen't zoom in or out. I think the 55-250mm lens would make a great addition to your kit. Although not great in low light conditions it is somthing you'll have to live with until you can afford faster glass.

Hi Sean, An f2.8 lens is a fast lens and can handle low light conditions, but they cost a lot of money. An example my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens cost me £1400 when purchased new. You see then second hand in the classifides for around £800-£900

Another point with the 55-250mm lens, is you should be able to get some nice candids. By this I mean people in the wedding party just standing chatting away not taking any notice of you standing there with your camera, thats the idea of a long lens. When I do a wedding I quite often put my 70-200mm on and look for facial expressions or children playing makes some great shots. A lot of people for some reason when they see a camera pointing at them they stop smiling, try and get them natural without being noticed.

Thats why I think this lens would suit him better. And within Sean's budget.

I have the 55 250 and it is excellent for getting those candid shots when you just can't get close enough or you will ruin the moment. I was thinking of getting a 70 200 but can't afford the IS version. Does anyone think it is worth getting without IS or should I stick to the 55 250

Sent from my iPad using TP Forums

There's a big difference in price between the non IS version and the IS version, so really it depends on your budget and if you can justify spending the extra cash on the IS version. You say you had some excellent shots with the 55-250mm, if your happy with that then stick with it untill funds allow the upgrade.

A nice shiny 70-200mm f2.8 on a D3s is not really comparable to a 55-250 f5.6 on a canon 400D though is it............

It may be fine outdoors but at 250mm your going to need a shutter of around 1/400 which inside is probably going to be difficult at best - your just going to end up with a load of blurry shots at 250mm.

OP - Have a look at
this and this http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lenses.htm#camera-shake

Yes your right, no comparison at all. I was assuming all the candids would be taken outside anyway. Given Sean's budget it's the best he can do. Let's hope it's a nice sunny day for him.

Another vote for the canon 55-250is good lens for the price 

I bought my 55-250 IS, from buyacamera.co.uk for £144 it has gone up in price since then because they now include a lens hood and a UV filter for £154.99

mmm.. very convinced about the 55-250 now as theres been a good reply supporting them.

Now the restrictions are put in place i cant go in the classifieds for a while untill i get a 100 posts.. lol

Whats this about renting? never hear about that before.

I was thinking about these guys... http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ I think their staff are on here too..

Not that expensive to rent from them and the price you see is including the insurance.. I came close to renting a lens from them but never got around to doing so.
