With Portra 800!! Shot 3 rolls on a shoot with a young lady almost two weeks ago and just received my scans back. It was bright sunshine where it would have been possible to shoot anything from 25iso upwards but I chose Portra 800 in 120 because I wanted a certain look from what I had read/learned when I had shot a single roll of 35mm. I was not disappointed. The contrast, saturation and the grain. Oh my!

@skysh4rk was right when he sang it's praises not too long ago. Looks like this could get expensive as I can't see me wanting to shoot anything else for non-wedding related people photos on film.

Pics or it didn't happen :D

Haha. I might post one or two later on. They might not be as good as I first thought on reflection. The film is ace, the pictures themselves maybe not so much.

Have heard some great stuff about Portra 800. Bloomin' expensive though. I need some more colour film in 120 right now! Look forward to seeing the pics (here or instagram)

After seeing the way it comes out, I actually am not worried about the price. It's awesome! What your IG name? DIdn't realise you followed me (or maybe I do, depends what you're called on there)

What this man said!!

Stop teasing Gareth!

Ha!

Ha!

Gaz,

I'm dedpxl_
I'm sure you follow me too.

O.K., I have 3 rolls from the shoot, just need to sort which are for public consumption or not. For now, here's one chosen at random because it's hot out there and it's fun. :)

Ace mate!

My bucket list contains taking a portrait of a red head! One day!

Thanks, Shaheed. Just get it done! haha.

It's a strange one, choosing which images to show. Not all of them will appeal to everyone, I get that. But I still find it so difficult!

Put them

In a portraits on film section [emoji106][emoji106][emoji12]

Haha. What I mean is, what is my final outlet for stuff like this? I guess that's a subject for a whooooole other topic but I do always wonder.

For me, it's the love of it and producing something beautiful/interesting.

This occasionally leads to somebody else wanting you to do the same for them and might want to pay you for the Privelege.

For me, creating something is enough for now. I just feel the urge to create something with more soul/character and a larger format - hence the MF film urge!!

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. And when I'm doing it, I love it. But then afterwards, like now, I have this empty feeling again.

No one is going to pay for this sort of stuff, the stuff I do personally which is fine, that's not why I do it. But I do wonder what the outlet is.

I guess it's like baking a cake. The process is fun, the eating is appreciated, but once it's gone what do you do next.

Bake more. Sell cakes......

Alternatively have a project/body of work that you can display.

Work towards a qualification, exhibit your work??

Write a cookery book...

(well, the equivalent)

a blog, a book...

Indeed. Gareth has got me interested in film and I know many admire his work!! Worth sharing experience/knowledge.

I joined the swpp in 2012 to improve through their mentor me programme. I submitted 20 pics and they gave me their basic qualification off the bat. I aim to get further advancement in due course.

This is something you could easily do - maybe the guild or something similar?

Interesting points. I've tried s blog before but I'm no writer. It just doesn't really do it for me. I'm not creating anything writes tic either or with any continuity between shoots from what I can see.

A book is an interesting idea but that would be a way off and again, with no continuity, I'm not sure how it would gel.

I have absolutely no desire to work to any sort of qualification either.

Wow, that all sounds a lot more negative than I was intending! Haha

I didn't aim towards getting a qualification, just the critique of my work. Just stumbled across one on the way!

The book could be just portraits with a line or two on each.

But I have to say, the Idea of presenting work printed big, really appeals to me!

You could call it Seriously SR :)

I wasn't sure what the fourth sentence meant, Gareth! However, you've mentioned the continuity thing a couple of times here. I wondered if you'd considered a project (a "project"!) where aspects of some idea are explored (so as to push yourself a bit on the continuity thing). Something more specific and/or thematic than my one Camera, One Lens, One Film project. There's a whole section here with ideas and examples, including the wonderful (second) 100 strangers project from @blakester (I'm sure there's been more than one of them). @Pookeyhead had some ideas. No idea what, but presumably something to do with photos of people in your case. Moods, colours (you've got your redhead already!), activities, relationships, interactions, endless possibilities?

There's a guy called Andrew Molitor who writes a somewhat weird blog called Photos and Stuff, who's very much into the idea of series rather than single images, eg this recent post:

The guy definitely fits my style in a lot of ways (personal style, that is). Serial photography is, to [Harald] Mante, first an exercise. The idea is that you find a theme. Blue. Pairs. Birds. Pots&Pans. People with red hair. Anything. Then you shoot pictures to fit the theme, any time, any where. Now, tomorrow, next year. You regularly rearrange and manage your set of pictures, throwing some out, adding new ones. Perhaps you divide a theme up as some new idea emerges from the pictures you've taken. Or not.

There's that redhead again!

Anyway, what would I know..

Lovely work as usual Gareth.
It's easy to see why you love the film so much, it renders such a lovely look/feel to the portrait.

Reference what to do with the images, as has been suggested, perhaps a book for each shoot as opposed to a series.
Then you would have continuity in the book, it could almost be a short story about your particular model.

I have a book for my project and intend to complete one for this my second round. I have never tried to promote the first book although it is available for others to purchase. I just love it as an artefact of my photography, something tangible as opposed to pixels on a screen, never really existing. This of course doesn't apply to your film shots.

I can't really suggest anything as to how you could market this shoot and others like it as I am no businessman.

Yeah I do like things printed. I have a couple of photos here at home that are printed fairly decent size and they look ace. I also have loads of small one just to see how stuff looks printed just knocking about in their little envelopes they get delivered in. And then there is the stack of Polaroids which are great fun to flick through.

Thank you for taking the time, Chris. Some great things to think about there. As for the redhead thing, I shall address that once I quote Iain's post in a sec.....

Thank you, Iain. Again, some good points. I don't have enough images from previous shoots to do a little book about each shoot. I think with some of the portraits I have already done, they have been on different film with no continuity in mind, however, I don't just have one redhead. I was talking to a friend the other day actually about printing them together. It could be called, "redheads on film" perhaps? Too cheesy?

Red Shift, perhaps?

I don't really know what that means?

Although just redheads would limit me going forwards that's for sure. I am trying to arrange shooting again at the moment but finding the right models that I want to work with is also a little tricky.

Tbh neither do I :D possibly best if I don't do thinking before breakfast.o_O

@gazmorton2000
Gareth, I think essentially any project could be looked upon as long term.
Redheads would make for a wonderful series but as you say, sourcing suitable models can be tricky if you wish them to fit a particular brief.
Commercially, I feel you'd have to have a few on the go, finishing at different times so as to maintain staged income (however that is achieved!)

"Redheads on Film" isn't cheesy IMHO. You are obviously keen to push the film aspect of this but I'm undecided as to if it is strictly necessary to promote that you've used film. Your film images have a certain look/quality about them that is different to digital. I'd be more inclined to let them speak for themselves.

I'm waffling a bit now, sorry, just thinking out loud.
I do think you should pursue this though, what's not to like about a series of portraits in a project haha?

Damn you man!!

Very jealous. As I say bucket list is to do a larger format (MF) portrait of redhead with freckles (not @minnnt!!)

I like the idea of printing them together but whilst your title is ok I reckon you could do better (not that I have better suggestions!!)

Hey, don't apologise for waffling. Good grief, I do that more than most. Thinking out loud is good. I have no desire to do this for income, although I would like an outlet for them. Sharing the odd one every few days on Instagram doesn't seem too rewarding. Although, I am just doing it because I love it so perhaps that's all the outlet I need?

Thanks, Shaheed. I am going to shoot with Jenny (model from first image here) again in the near future once we have a couple more ideas. :)

I've been trying to think of something but have drawn a blank.

Apart from the usual 'Girls on Film' - with different chapters on different hair colours. So, hair colour would define the chapter and skin colour, maybe, creating more general interest.

Interesting.

Just been looking through the photos from the last shoot. So many keepers but too many to share in one go anywhere without people getting sick of them or then making comparisons from image to image. I think I am overthinking this perhaps? But I see people sharing like 20 images on, for example, Purple Port from a shoot because they are all decent photos. I think choosing which to share is important but I now see the problem when you have so many keepers.

If they're all keepers from one shoot, release them slowly. Mix them up with others.

The colour is red. That's what I might be tempted to call it.
