I got married in June last year and we made a decision togther not to have a pro tog. There were may reasons for this, the main ones being financial, but the others being that we just didnt feel it would be nessecary. It was a very small wedding, only 25 people and I just couldnt see the point. The whole wedding, dress, reception, suit, car etc only cost about £2k, probably less, so another £500 odd or whatever on a photographger just didnt add up. No photos were allowed during the ceremony anyway, so the tog would have only had 10 minutes outside the registry office to get anything.
We had several friends with P&S and we got some nice (ish) photos from them. No they arent the quality of a pro, but then again, they didnt cost us anything, but still convey the emotion of the day and we have a couple printed around the house.
If its of any note, one of the best photos of the day IMO, was a drunken snapshot taken by me on my mums P&S, and Ive had it printed to A4.
