I am getting fed up carrying my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8

I am thinking about getting rid of it. or replacing it with the lighter Sigma 50-150mm but I'm scared I will miss it.

Any opinions?

Cheers

Stuart

im in the same boat! in terms of weight. im tempted to go down the primes route. I guess there is a need for zoom but i think i can live without!

Hi Stuart,

I had the 50-150mm for a while but got rid of it in favour of the 70-200mm f2.8

I found the images from the 50-150mm to be quite soft especially wide open and was never really that happy with it. It's also a lens that's designed for APS-C sensors so if you ever plan to go full frame, you may have an issue with it although I'm not that clued up about the way Nikon mount cameras go about such things (assuming that your Fuji S3 is a Nikon mount).

Hope that helps a little,
Si

What about a Sigma 105 f/2.8? Nice and light and bang in the middle of the focal lengths of the 50-150........

tele primes are xpensive, I'd like a 135L and 'maybe' 200/2.8 but I doubt it'd be worth it for the use, like to buy a standard zoom (24-70L/24-105L) and the 135 would give me primes AND zooms for the whole range - perfect backup system

Rent a 200-400 for the weekend then appreciate how small the 70-200 really is!? :p

You wouldn't want to carry my Lowepro vertex around then lol.
Stuart why not get a Lowepro toploader zoom to carry off your shoulder, then you can just take out the camera and 70-200 when you need to use it.

Keep the 70-200, together with a standard zoom, you only need 2 lenses for 90% of the time. If you think the 70-200 is heavy, you want to try living with a 300 f2.8 mounted on one shoulder and a 500 f4 mounted on the otherand a bag with other lenses in it as well..... No wonder I have a bad back.

Go and eat some porridge and stop being a wooos.:D

If you haven't done so get a decent neck strap, it will make the camera feel 50% lighter. I walked around 5 miles a couple of weeks back with a 5d mk ii and canon 2.8 70-200 around my neck and a couple of lenses and a tripod on a bag, it was heavy but my neck strap saved the day.

Cheers guys. I have got a Lowpro Vertex 100. the problem is the only way I fit everything in is to have the Fuji mounted to the 70-200mm which isn't the most used set up. That being said it is a really useful lens.

Cheers Stuart

My idea with primes is the 135L with an extender (effectively 189mm). Primes are great when you know what focal distance you need. What type of photography do you do? it might be a zoom is more suitable.

I have 2 bodies so have the luxury of having 2 primes at the ready at any one time!

I'm beginning to hate self about "what type of photography" because I just photograph anything that want. I love it but the down side is I want every type of lens and I'm not very good at any one thing. Its very frustrating.

Here is a example of the random images I take

As long as you enjoy taking photos it doesn't matter what you take shots of - piles of dog muck might be your thing but if it makes you happy then that's the key. :)

nikon 70 - 300 vr, much lighter and still a cracking lens

:agree: +another 1

I've just traded my Siggie 70-200 f2.8 for a Canon 70-200 f4L.
I was struggling with the Siggie due to a shoulder injury
The Canon is sooooo much lighter and absolutely tack sharp.

If I was to jump ship it would be to Sony.

But I am too fond of the Voigtlanders to move brand.

I was thinking my dream kit would be

Fuji S5
Tamron 17-50mm
Voigtlander 40mm and 58mm
and the Nikkor 85mm f1.8

I and my SB-600

Just not sure I'm feeling brave enough to make the jump!

Have to say I have a nice set of Canon 2.8f L-Series lenses from 16-35 through to the 70-200mm which carrying around the Lakes on trekking days becomes really tiresome. This year I also used a Tamron 28-300mm & although missed the 2.8f DOF for some shots did make some days a lot easier for me. Quality wise you have to look hard to see the difference in landscape images I take & was brilliant for the Apleby Horse Fair

I also have that bag, but it just gets used as a gear caddy at home - it's just too much weight and gear. If the 70-200 is coming with, I use a thinktank digital holster 50 with the body attached (strap, over the shoulder). If you want to carry other lenses/bodies too then the thinktank is probably best belt-mounted, but that's a line in the sand I'm hesitant to cross :bonk:

100% with you on the Voigtlanders, my new favourite pack is D700 with CV40/2 in a lowepro apex 110aw :)

I am tempted by a prime. But I'm not sure what focal length! :D
I think telephoto primes aren't that practical for everyday situations. At the normal and wide-angle end, you move a couple of steps to change composition. For the tele-range that can amount to quite a bit of walking.

Btw, there are rumours about a 24-105mm f/4 VR by Nikon. Maybe a 70-200 f/4 VR will follow.

Or you could invest in a gym membership and bulk-up a little...:D

That is EXACTLY my sentiment; or at least it was until I told myself to stop snapping everything for the sake of it. Now basically the only thing I photograph is urban dilapidation and people/animals - and I've put a ban on any new kit I want

Voightlanders are nice lenses, try the Zeiss as well.

As for the Sigma, I personally would not get rid of it, mine is mounted 99% of the time with a 1.4tc as well.

Your girlfriend is not the same thing as everyone else on this planet. The OP may have personal issues that present a problem with the weight.

My mother was in a car crash a good few years ago now and as such permanently has pain in her shoulder when lifting anything remotely heavy. She held my 1Ds for a few seconds and said already it hurt her shoulder.

The Zeiss engineers are round in our lab trying to fix our Two photon microscope just now so I could always try and wrangle a student discount! :D
Yours doesn't work either? Bleh, ours is out of action since the new LSM710 moved in.

No they are quite right!

It was the same weight as it was in the winter. I carry my camera equipment with me every day. its just as we have gotten hotter weather I arrive places sweating like a pig!

Getting fitter is a suggestion that would not do me any harm!
