Last week I found out that the local pro tog does short one or two day training courses at a very reasonable rate, so went in to speak to him about them.

This afternoon I have my first lesson, where he takes you through the basics of the camera, work in his studio, and by the end of the 3 hour session I should've learnt enough to never take the camera out of manual mode.

I will be doing other courses he offers too, including a nightshoot.

This fella knows his stuff, being going for 20 odd years and just won North East Tog of The Year for the 3rd year in a row.

Can't wait to get started, should improve my togging massively.

Well, let us know how you get on...

Sounds great. A pity there are not more local opportunities about to learn the skills. Local collage course did not run this year because of lack of funds. :bang:

Hope to see the fruits of your labours soon.;)

Meant to say....

Photos or it didn't happen :D

Excellent, sounds great to me... hoping to hear good things when you report back.. .I feel something like that would be far more beneficial to me than other forms of learning.

gratz on that Simon, sounds a good teacher

Apologies for delay in reply.

Yesterday was cancelled at last minute due to problem he had at home, so have re-arranged for next Tuesday as it's my next day off work.

I will report back next Tuesday night.

So if ever your outside in daytime with fast moving clouds that make the light change at a fast rate.. how are you going to manage in manual ?

So had my first session yesterday, more of an introduction to photography, and the workings of the camera.

He explained in great detail how shutter speeds and aperture works, and how to use them properly, as well as sharing to tricks of the trade. He explained it in a way that made it really understandable, along with practical use outside and inside his studio.

Also went into detail about different lenses and flashguns, how they work and how to get the best out of them.

He also encourages keeping in touch and sending in photos so he can critique.

A very enjoyable 3 hours where i've learned so much, with an excellent pro tog. I just have to get out now and put it into practise, and luckily I have another 2 days off work now he he.

Will be booking a second session which is a night shoot around in Durham.

I'm pretty sure you can move your dials quicker than clouds can move

How much did he charge for the 3 hours?

wow, thats really cheap. Who was the guy? and why on earth does he only want to earn £10 an hour?

Unless it wasn't a personal session?

I thought it was really cheap too, considering his credentials, and it was a one-to-one session.

He's based in Hartlepool, Robert Usher Photography, and has just won North East Tog Of The Year for the 3rd year running.

He does other courses too which I will be looking into, and considering his experience they are very good value for money.
