It seems some people think I know a thing or two about photography. But alongside some of the people resident here I know nothing. OK, I admit, I know what depth of field is! ;)

I just realised it's probably 40 years ago since I started doing darkroom work - with a utility enlarger! I had been using a camera long before then. Before I upgraded to a Kodak Brownie box camera, I had been using what passed as a compact in those days. The viewfinder had no lenses, so when I composed in the viewfinder what came out on the neg was a speck on the horizon!

Now 40 years on I'm probably only a year further down the photographic road. I think I paid too much attention to the technicalities and not enough to the artistic side of photography.

OK, I guess you are dying to find out about my equipment!

When they first came out I bought a Canon EOS 650. It was impressive. But when it came to taking pictures, it was too much for me to work out everything that needed to be done, so I just switched it to auto. Then it got too cumbersome and I bought an Olympus compact. That was replaced by a 2MP Canon Sureshot A40 compact. Since the beginning of this year I have been using a Fujifilm S6500fd. If you are not familiar with it, it's one of those that looks like an SLR but acts like a compact.

I would have preferred a proper D-SLR, but the budget wouldn't stretch to it! Yes the S6500fd has spent most of its time on 'auto' (except when I acidentally knock the mode selector knob without noticing it). But I am now venturing to some of the other settings and think more about the picture. Having read a few magazine articles helps. Getting more creative also has helped improve the quality of the shots I take.

As for image manipulation, I have been doing for many years; well before digital cameras were in vogue! Oh, and they were other people's pictures in the main. I have not ventured too deeply into the subject, because I haven't found a need for most of the effects etc. one gets in modern programs.

I started off with Photogenics on the Amiga. In those days it was truly amazing. Nowadays my preferred program is Paint Shop Pro Photo. I also use Irfan View, Photo Filtre, Xara Xtreme and, if I have to (which isn't so often these days) Photoshop Elements.

Cheers

Brian

Welcome aboard from another Paint Shop Pro user.

Hello :)

I like it when people join and say what they were doing 40 years ago. I don't feel so old then ;)
