I've just spent an hour with a rocket blower cleaning my lens and cleaning my sensor after spotting the mark in the below pic (outlined by the black star, pic levels boosted to show it)
After seeing it on a print I did earlier.

No matter what I did it was still there when I re took the shot.

Of course dipstick here didn't stop to think that the mark might be on the window behind the plant and not on the lens or sensor!!:bonk:

I've learnt my lesson there, look for the simple explanation before leaping into more work than is needed.

'Think before you leap' . . . applies to so many things in life, we generally learn the hard way . . .

That's right up there with retouching spots that are actually on your monitor ;) Everyone's done it.

On change I've made to minimise this is when you're checking for dust move the camera. I use a blank wall indoors and make sure the shutter speed is nice and slow. Move the camera during the test shot. Blurred stuff is on the wall, sharp stuff is on the sensor.

1. do this http://anttila.ca/michael/pinholelens/

then use the result to take a quick 3/4 second snap of something non distinct

2. pop the image on the screen (PC)

3. you will now know where your dust is, remember the sensor is the other way round (left=right, top=bottom)

4. enjoy your new toy, its a fun way of shooting

 Yup +1 I have done this too - bird deposit on the window I was shooting through. After 5 attempts of cleaning someone pointed it out :bonk:

At least you have peace of mind now Ian!

LOL!!!

I shouted at my laptop once when I couldn't photoshop out a little black dot on a pic - turned out it as a tiny bit of fluff on my screen

You definitely aren't alone!!!! :D

LOL!!

Reminds me of the time I did some macro shots of a flower. There was an irritating mark on all the shots, I was convinced it was the lens and cleaned it. Turns out it was a tiny spec of glitter which was on the flower. :)
