I was in central Manchester yesterday to get some shots of the 100,000 football fans that had taken over.

The big screen in Picadilly Gardens broke down, so the fans were odviously not too happy about it. I KNEW they were going to riot, but went to get shots of more fans at the town hall.

I'm SO gutted that I didn't stay in Picadilly and get some photos of the rioting. So annoyed!

One of my friends went with his 5D and got some awesome shots.

I was half expecting you to say actually that your camera had been trashed because of the riot's!!

glad it hasnt though :)

i was expecting that after reading the first few line to be honest

glad camera etc is fine but unlucky regarding the pics
 
It's a strange world when an outbreak of mass violence is seen as a photo oppertunity rather than a serious social issue. Glad you and your kit are ok.

Well, why not? Someones going to capture it, so jump on the bandwagon I say.

This sounds crazy, but I followed the G8 riots up here in EDI, on a point and shoot Sony DSC. I was on the front line, REFUSING to do anything other than take photos :D It was very VERY exciting, and whilst I feel guilty looking back, I am still glad I captured some of it. My friend was alongside with his Nikon SLR - got a bit hairy when everyone decided it was time to leg it from Princess Street to the Meadows. It was a case of run with them, or be trampelled.

It eventually came to a stand off at St Andrews Square and Rose Street.

What a day that was.

Yeah my friend was there and got chased by a riot policeman lol.

He's not a football fan, just in the middle of it with his camera, found himself running away from police most of the time.

I'm never too worried about taking my camera kit out, it's all insured.

@a1ex2001 - The main reason i'm really gutted is that i'm trying to get into photojournalism so am trying to get press-style shots at every opportunity. This riot could have been a perfect opportunity to get some excellent shots for my portfolio.

I got a few good ones earlier in the day (1 or 2 of which I might put into my portfolio) but i'm just so annoyed about it!

Near the bottom, give it a watch. The first minuate is horrendous. A policeman trips and falls over and is then surrounded by what looks like 20 people who just constantly punch and kick him. I'm amased he was able to get up and run off.

Manchester's never really experienced anything like this, the police were just unable to stop the violence properly. It was the busyest night ever for the police and emergency services.

It's an absolute disgrace, loads of Scottish people were appauled by the way Manchester City Council organised the big screens, which I do partly agree with, but the way the fans reacted to it was totally unnaceptable.
 
Shame you missed the shots but at least you are okay.

And people wonder why I don't like football. Rioting because a telly broke down and a fan stabbed inside the stadium - anyone for the beautiful game? :shake:

I too was contemplating jumping on a train to join in the picture taking....was watching the coverage on north west tonight, spotted a couple of gutsy togs running around with their flash going off every couple of seconds :D

Quite glad I didn't the scots were intimidating enough during daylight and happy...."OI! TAKE MY PICTURE!!"....I'd have been bricking it with one running at me, closely followed by a copper!

It is a photo oppotunity, and a serious social issue. Pretty sure most people on this site understand that.

It's a crazy feeling being in about something like that. I remember when I used to live in Glasgow the England/Scotland Euro 200 qualifying match was taking place. I went in to the city centre with my 35mm SLR and took loads of pics of the rioting. Scary stuff.

Some skinheaded nutter came over and threatened to kick the s**t out of me if I took his photo. He was pushing and shoving me about the place before he lost interest and backed off.

These people are absolute scum, they use football as a thinly veiled excuse to act like total animals.

I speak from the opposite side of the fence, I am a cop and was down at the G8 trying to keep a lid on things. I am all for legitimate protest and presence but freaking out like that is not on, there could have been cops killed in Manchester last night.
