I'm a Newbie! Canon EOS 350D or 400D?!

400D. It's an update from the 350D, more MP, bigger screen (which is very useful) and dust reduction. I have had mine since the 400D was released and I have to say I've not noticed any sensor dust at all and I change lenses quite frequently so the system does seem to work!

 Oh and welcome by the way

Thanks.
Have you heard of Ian Kerr? Kerso? if so does he trade on ebay?
I've tried emailing him but have had no response yet.

I went the other way, I already had some Canon lenses from an EOS1000, so Canon was the natural choice. I looked at 300D's but found s/h they were not much cheaper than the 350D. I knew the 400D was on its way, so I waited a month or so and then bought a 350D as the prices went into free-fall (they have stabilised now as the RRP of the 400D has gone up from the beginning of this year).

Yes the 400D has more MP (but unless you are blowing up to bigger than A3 prints will you really notice it.

Yes the 400D has a bigger LCD panel, but now the camera settings LCD is combined (rather than being on a seperate panel) and since this display is colour only, it will use more battery.

Yes the 400D has an anti-dust facility, but I've regularly changed lenses and not noticed and dust spots.

I reckon the saving over the 400D goes quite a way to another lens, tripod etc.Personally I would rather have these and be able to move them on to the next camera when the ineviatble upgraditus strikes!

yes Ian is a top bloke

Send him a PM here on TP (username is Kerso) and he'll get back to you. Most of my gear is bought from him. Honest guy that will do all he can to help you. He imports to his sister here in Scotland and therefore you don't need to worry about VAT or any tax liability as he sorts that out in the states.

I met Ian when he was home in Scotland last year and although I missed his last visit I'll certainly catch up again. I just bought a house so my spending is now somewhat curtailed :)

Cheers and welcome

Regards
Jim

Hi I have bought pretty much all of my gear through Ian and would highly recommend him. Give him time to return your email, he doesn't spend all day in front of his computer ;) He will get back to you and I think you'll be pleasently surprised by his prices and service.

Another vote for Ian Kerr (kerso)

Really honest bloke who bends over back-wards to help you. You may even get a courtesy call too..:)

This might be too late but here goes...

Don't buy either....Get the 30D or even a 20D if you can still get one!!

I have both the 350D and the 20D and I can tell you the 20/30D is 3 times the camera from a build quality point of view if nothing else.

If I had known earlier what I know now I would probably not have bought the 350...

OK All you 350 owners stone me now

:boxer: :D

Oh yes sorry:eek:

Welcome!!

Nothing wrong with the 400D. But PLEASE go into a store and HANDLE it to seee if you like it. It's a great camera at an attractive price with great features but if it's not comfy in your hands, your not going to use it

Hi there! I recently had my 350D stolen and have replaced it with the 400D. Same size in the hand, but bigger LCD makes a difference. Don't like all the info on the LCD.....prefered the layout of the 350.....but otherwise, looking good, though not used it in anger yet. However, although lots of people said get the 30D it's just too big for me, so go to a shop and try them all out to see what feels right for you.

Depending on what you plan to shoot you may well find the superior focusing system of the 400D more useful than it's higher MP count and if you're used to a P & S camera then having all the info on the LCD won't be an issue for you either.

The difference in price between the 30D and 400D is just under £300 when buying with the 18-55mm kit lens compared to just £80 difference over the 350D.

I'd buy the 400D in your shoes. It's an ideal tool for learning about photography. :)
