Yes
Went out to shoot some landscapes and buildings tonight and ended up coming home early with a young sparrow (i think) in a box.
I was getting my gear out the boot and this little bird flies (barely) into it pursued by the farm cat.
Frightened the cat off and put the bird on the ground.
He just looked at me, put him on a fence, he just looked at me, i turned away and walked to the car, turned looked back and there he was at my feet looking at me.
Put him on a higher ledge. You guessed it, he flew down and followed me to the car.
Thought i saw his mother so i put him on the ground, she walked right past him without so much as a look, and yes..he followed me.
So my options were, leave him to die or take him home.

How do i feed him?
I need to know very quickly.
Thanks

I also have some cracking pictures of him, on the ground, ledge and fence just looking at me.

Tried feeding him some mushed up cat food, he took a few bits of it so it looks promising.
Will get him some worms tomorrow.

bet your pleased at least hes eating how old is he

Don't know the exact circumstances, but if you chased the farm cat away would it not have been better to have left it where it was, IIRC that is the advice from the RSPB as usually the parents are not that far away and a few calls from the fledgling will attract them.

I could be wrong though, best of luck in the upbringing anyway, your heart was in the right place.

I tried m8 but he just kept following me, even tonight he has been flying out his box and waiting for me to put my finger out so he can jump on it and get taken back to the box. Rinse and repeat, it really is very strange. The bird just seems totally 100% at ease with me.

Personally I think you should keep it and feed it, nurture and love it, then when the time is ready you should start to train it. Train it so that it may fly away when the time is ready and train other birds and pass on the knowledge that you gave it. Some day it'll remember you and in return will come back to you with a whole army of birds. Birds of various species. It'd be like this one big diverse army and all the different types of birds can use their varying attributes as special powers. Each one with it's own finishing move.

Bread is good, you can also keep it in a bath and wash it now and then. If you're going to let it sleep in the same bed I'd recommend putting it in a shoe box with holes in it so that it can breath, then put a pillow or two in between you and the box so that you don't roll onto it or eat it by accident. Also, try and do that when you wife is sleeping. That way she won't suspect anything is up. Make sure you wake up before your wife too. Actually, do you have a wife and if so does she know about the bird?

Birds are great, especially pigeons. I love how they walk and their head moves in a different direction to their bodies. They make nice noises also. Sometimes if you give a pigeon food lots of other pigeons fly down to get some also. You should protect your baby bird from pigeons, and other invertebrates.

Post some pictures.

You should probably have left it, although I know you've acted with the best intentions. Birds which fall from the nest are often fed on the ground by parents and they usually find cover from predators.

You have to watch it becoming totally dependent on you now and forgetting it's a bird. Do the minimum you have to, don't overdo the human contact, and let it go as soon as it looks capable of flight. Good luck!
And yep - post some pics.

CT is right. Best chances a bird has for survival is with is parents, and even then things like sparrows, blue tits etc all have large numbers of young basically to cover the loses. Sounds grim but it is survival of the fittest

Now, contact should be to a minimum, feed things like cat food and mealworms as get it to pick these up for itself. Don't feed bread or milk, this will cause things like entiritus and will cause serious problems. It sounds as though its now flying so I would really consider releasing it as soon as possible and do this near were he was taken from, at least it will be familier. Remember he is a wild bird and I know you had the best intentions but taking birds from the wild is actually illegal, even in these situations.

Good luck with it and fingers crossed. He will be ok.
