This has been giving me a headache for a week or so now.

The guys on POTN rave about the 055 being awesome and with legs fully extended it's perfect for people around 6'. But....I'm not.

I know that the 190 has a smaller extended length so could anyone around my height pass on some helpful advice please? :)

And it'll be paired with a 488RC2 ball head if that makes any difference.

I'm 6' 1" and I have a 190. Doesn't cause any real problems but it does mean I need the centre column extended to get it high enough to be comfortable if angle isn't an issue. I would think the 55 would be better though so I would go for that if I was you. Even if you dont need the height - the fact you can avoid using the centre column is a plus

The less you extend a tripod the better - the 055 would be fine, you just dont need to fully extend the legs which is a good thing.

I have the 055PROXB and its frikkin ace.

:agree: (reluctantly ;))

I'm 5' 7" too - I don't like to extend the centre column if I can help it, but there have been plenty of occasions when when I've needed to - sand, water & boggy ground are all times when the legs are lower than your own feet - so having a bigger tripod really helps, and still doesn't need to be fully extended (which is always going to be less stable)

The right tripod is critical otherwise you won't use it, a tripod ain't no good if it'S left at home, also if you get it right first time you'll save money in the long run:thumbs:

I have to agree with DD. That's the main reason I went for the 055 was it's height without the raised center column. ( and I'm 5ft 9 1/2 )

I agree completely. I received a Hama Star 61 with my camera and it's, quite frankly, pap. Certianly wouldn't have bought one new.

I've only used it indoors so far but the head is so flimsy that any breath of wind outside will cause image shake.

Hence the thread. :)

I was in the same boat, short (5' 7 or 8") and went for the 055xprob. I found it much more sturdier than the 190. You don't have to use the 055 fully extended but its there if you need it, with the 190 if your using it fully extended at all times and then find you need that little more height in certain situations when you can't get it any taller. Plus you can then add the shorter center column if you want to get really low with the camera on the 055 and still have plenty of height to play around with, wouldn't be as good imo with the 190 where you might need the longer center column at times.

Some very sound advice. Thank you kindly.

I think you've all swayed me to go with the 055. Bring on pay day! :D

Out of curiosity what tripod would people suggest for someone 6' 7" apart from constantly squatting :D

Gitzo systematic, keep your eye's on ebay for good prices also think about what head your going to use, some add height anyway without the column adjusted

If you want to stay with Manfrotto you'll need to look at the 058 or 475 range. The 058 extends to around 7' I believe. As Agger said, don't forget the head will add some height.

Good god fella's those tripods cost more than my 400d :D

I'm 6'5" and have the 055. Fully the legs fully extended (not centre) I can only just see into the viewfinder. LOL

I went out for the 190 and came home with the 055 (and I am a lot shorter than you) and I have nver regretted it - it is somewhat heavy to carry around but I did it on the Hastings meet at New Year when I was feeling really ropey with a cold - and quite a few of us ended up using it.

It is also useful if there is a hedge in your way as if you have a step ladder (planned shot so I took one with me) the extra height comes in very useful.

????:D

I am 5ft 9 and I simply love my 055, thought at first I should have gone for the smaller 190 but just had it out for the first real go with it today and it has ticked all the boxes for me, and, under normal use never had to use the extension once.

I was doing a series of shots of a particular tree over a year and during the summer the hedge was too high to see over and I could not get over it so I took a step ladder with me :)
