Does anyone else have a problem with this film? This is the third roll I've tried with the same results. Three different cameras and all loaded in the shade/inside. This one was taken on a Nikon F4.

One roll had no usable results, one had about 16 and this one had 10. Others have had a couple at the end of the roll but I expect that's because they are 'hand rolled'.

I like the stuff because when it works .....

I've only shot 2 rolls of this film and one of them showed the fault in the photo below, but only a few frames were like this and this one was clearly the worst. I've recently used that camera again on other films without problems. Not sure that gets you any further with the isssue, but thought I'd reply.

Hi,
I too had this problem with the first roll I tried of this film. In my case I cured the problem, by testing my camera with a roll of HP5 Plus which
showed no problems with the camera. The faults on the roll of 517 were occasioned by light leaking around the trap on the cassette where the film comes out and the camera back which has a window so you can view the cassette to see what type of film you have loaded. The lord himself or herself only knowns why some need gimmick, I think of it as care in the community.

I have now used this film in several cameras and the ones without a window in the back are OK. The ones with a window in the back I have had success covering the window with black electrical insulation tape.

All the best.........

Never thought of this. I’ll try a roll in my Olympus OM 4ti (y)

Ah, my problem was with a Nikon F80 which does indeed have a window in the back.

As above, I'd suggest blocking the window with black electrical tape and if that cures the problem, I'd get the foam seal around the window (and probably ALL the foam seals) replaced.

I wish I'd seen this thread earlier...

Two rolls of Type 517 shot with my F80 yesterday show these effects, on almost every frame on one roll too! I'm glad I know the reason - much easier to use the film in a different camera or to cover the film window than have to fix or replace the camera, but I'm gutted nonetheless as the shots are all from a day trip to the seaside which is not easily repeatable.

I'll have to hope I can rescue some shots by cropping, and I did shoot some colour film in a different camera too, so there's that.

This might suggest there's a slightly dodgy batch of it.

It mentions under exposing seems to create weird lines which is the exact opposite of what I'd expect.

Never knew it existed so will possibly add it to my list of weird ass film to try. I have two manual ASA cameras with no film window so they'd be good candidates for usage of it.

Thanks Suz.

Mine was shot at the rated speed of 100ASA.

I found a similar reported problem here: https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/128865/what-causes-these-light-leaks-on-bulk-loaded-film - although this just refers to bulk-loaded film, not Type 517, it looks like the same issue. The leaks are very similar.

It's a really nice film though, so well worth getting some at it's low price.

I did conclude that it was the loaded film 'window' on the back of my Aria that was causing minor light leaks with TP 517 as neither my Olympus XA or both my Son's Nikons FG20 and FM2N have had problems.
I think that the silver swaged on end caps have a wider diameter than the usual black end caps found on Fuji / Kodak / Harman cassettes, the increased size holding off the window's foam light seal and it's reflective nature ? The Aria has not fogged any of the APX100 or Kentmere 100 I have subsequently used in it despite the occasional poor felt light traps found on KM100, and that could be a whole new thread.

Thank you!

Hopefully I have only wasted half a roll before carrying out this modification.
