A really good book is Understanding Exposure. It can be had from the amazon marketplace for under £8 from the book depository. It's a really good book, explaining all this kind of stuff.

This from another part of the Forum and about 4 of us have purchased it today, might be what you are looking for. Regards Jim

thanks for your help....i have ordered book on amazon as suggested.....i hope it will make it clear to me....i am finding it difficult to 'get my head round'.....thanks again.....jackie

Jackie, just keep playing with the camera as well, it will start to make sense eventually, have had my 400d a couple of months now and it is slowly making sense and sinking in.:D

thanks a lot .....i shall come back to that later and try to absorb it....! jackie

Av and Tv settings on your camera to see what your camera chooses. Av will set the time according to the aperture you want to use, i.e if you want a shallow DoF you'll use F/2.8 or whatever as opposed to F/11.
Tv, you choose the shutter speed you want to use and the camera will choose the aperture for you, the longer shutter speed you use the higher?* the aperture will be.

*i always get confused as toy what is high and low F/stop, to confirm, is the lower number the higher aperture, F/2.8 high and F/22 low?
