It seems AOL, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to incorrectly mark us as senders of email to "a high volume of incorrect recipients", and thus have sort-of blacklisted us.

Therefore, if you have an AOL email address, then forum emails will not be getting through to you.
We've been receiving many many bouncebacks for users, so I have been liaising with AOL trying to get it resolved, unfortunately, as you may guess, their postmaster department is as useful as their tech support. ;)

For the time being, we would like anyone with an AOL email address to change it to a non AOL address (will need to be revalidated of course).
If you dont have a non AOL address handy that you can use, then instead, please turn off all your thread subscriptions, and also, in your UserCP, disable "Email me when I get a new Private Message".

We'll also have to restrict new users from signing up with an AOL address for the time being.

Sorry about this everyone, it's not our fault. It's AOL. Shame they can't get rid of the REAL spam. ;)

This is really common. Typical AOL automated nonsense.

Given the number of forums they do this to and the large number of people that use forums now, it must cost them a fair number of customers.

This isn't a short term problem. AOL have been useless at handling emails for a very long time now. Whereas some ISPs apply some rules (restrictions) some of the time, AOL applies them all, all of the time and then make up a few extra of their own. Never mind the spam, more legitimate emails get binned by AOL than get through.

I regularly issue work/jobs by email to 40 plus peeps around the country. About nine months ago I had to take the decision not to entrust these emails to anyone using AOL.

I agree. Ive replied to one of the chaps at AOL US, (ironically by email). If he doesnt sort it for me then theres not much we can do, and will have to have a permanent ban on AOL email addresses.
It's not something we want to do, but will be forced to.
 
However, why can [AOL] they not see this as a way customers will not use their AOL email addresses and would be forced to use an alternate - maybe free google gmail - address...? It may even force customers away from AOL altogether...!

I wouldn't make a decision not to use a forum if I knew the reason I couldn't use my email address was not the forum owners fault. I'd get an alternate email address...

Its the same for photographers direct, (the stock picture library) I have tried to contact the aol postmaster to allow e-mails through from pd but with no joy.

AOL Customer Services, Technical Support and Billing are all the same department they are all completely useless idiots and what they do is they go to the local job-centre, and all the people who cannot get a job - a NORMAL job - they send them to work with AOL. Therefore...nothing get's done. I have had problems with AOL [when I've needed help and not got it, and eventually sorted it myself] and they frustrate me...however....

...I have been with AOL for the last 10 years, I like the set-up of it, and the chat-rooms [when i go in them] etc....and we're not all that bad.... :)

What Kind of issues is it going to cause if I change my email addy? [altho I really dont want to]
 
Shouldnt cause any issues. You will have to reconfirm your new email address though, via a link etc (Just like when you joined), any problems with that, just PM me :)
 
A little bump so this gets back onto the new posts link and main page.

We still have a few members who we're getting bouncebacks from. We understand that AOL might be the only ISP for some, but there really is nothing we can do.

If AOL is your ISP, and you dont have access to another email, you can sign up for a free Hotmail or Google Mail address. It really does only take a few minutes to set one up.

In the meantime, we're also getting error mails returned for those who are subscribing to their threads with email notification set to on, and also email notification on PM's. If you have an AOL or AIM email address, please turn these off...They really are clogging up our inboxes :)

I'm in the web business. All the sites on my server suffer from something similar. If a thank-you mail is generated by our server to an AOL address, it does not get through. Who the heck do these people think they are? OK a forum like this is inconvenienced, but for some of my clients its their business that AOL is interfereing with. I'd be interested in knowing how you get on :-)

They want me to phone the AOL Postmaster in the US. Nice to see an Internet Service Provider won't deal with something online...lol
 
I am an AOL user as well and they are a bunch of t***s. I think after all these years I know more about fixing it than they do. If its not in their book they just cut you off while speaking to them.:shrug:
 
Another bump because we're still getting bouncebacks from people with AOL addresses. We really don't want to force people to change their email addresses, like most other forums do, but we're getting bouncebacks because people aren't turning their notifications off.

If you are using an AOL email address on the forums, please either change to a non AOL email address, or go to your thread subscriptions and delete the ones that are sending you an email.
Also, you will need to go into your user control panel and set the option "Receive email upon new Private Message", to unticked.

I run a number of on-line businesses and I hate AOL! I always groan if someone emails me with an AOL address because I just know the chances are my reply will not get through.

It has now got to the point where I just don't reply to AOL addresses, it's just not worth it.

Why is AOL so bad?
 
Do you have reverse DNS setup for talkphotography.co.uk mailserver? If not, set it up and you will find that there should be no issues with AOL.

AOL have stopped accepting emails from domains without reverse DNS.
 
Ok, update, you DO have reverse DNS setup for the domain. However, you also have the following issue that will prevent AOL (and some other servers) from accepting mail:

One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server.

mail.talkphotography.co.uk claims to be host bluequartz.ip1hosting.net [but that host is at 83.245.32.208 (may be cached), not 83.245.32.209].

Note you do have some critical issues with the DNS record that need sorting.
 
That's not why they blocked us Vinny, I'm aware of the two different IP addresses (208/209) and the DNS issues.

I checked with AOL, and thats not why.

All their online checkers say we are now in the clear and are set up correctly for them to receive email from us. It's the IP of the mail server theyve blocked, not the domain.

To resolve it I need to ring the states to get it lifted, but trying to get through to them is like going round in circles banging my head with a hammer.

yeap AOL are crap at emails on some forums :| i recently signed up to one and couldn't receive the validation email, luckily i could pm the admin.

i could have sworn i used it on here as well, but must have put my sensible head on and used my other addy :lol:
 
People with AOL need to be taken out back and shot lol
 
I have 90 GMAIL invites i can send out if anyone would like one to use instead of their AOL or other email address. Just PM me your email address and i will send you one
 
I run two forums hosted with supanames and using the smf forum scripts and AOL blocks everything from the Forum!
 
We've lifted the restriction on AOL email addresses, as we're now on a new server and thus a new IP.
