Just for fun. And hypothetically. If you could only choose one lens to shoot a wedding with, which one would it be and why?

For me it would have to be the nifty fifty for it's sharpness and low light performance.

The obvious answer would be the 24-70mm 2.8, but I'd say a 24mm 1.4 could be fun!

Definitely the 24-70. Wide enough for group shots, on FF, and long enough to get closer candids without being too invasive.

I'm not and never will be a shooter of weddings but if I were to have a gun against my head and HAVE to cover one with just one lens, it would be a 24-70 f/2.8. I'd be happy for the D700 to handle the low light situation to have the flexibility of wide-medium length. I'm not a fan of super shallow DoF so wouldn't miss the wide aperture there either.

I almost went for an 18-200 but decided that the compromises in IQ and speed were too much (and, not having looked into them, I'm not sure they're FF suitable).

24-70 f/2.8 everytime. I'd be sure to get all the shots I wanted to from a wedding with that one lens. I wouldn't stress out in the slightest over it.

35mm 1.4 such a fast and super sharp lens. Focusing not a problem and wide enough to include all environments :-)

My equivalent to the 24-70..... The crop 17-55.

You'd miss too many shots with a prime, could be fun as a second shooter though!

As many others have said, i'd go with a 24-70 2.8....If i was the main photographer....

If i was second shooting, then the 70-200 :)

A 35 1.4 is a beauty, really getting to like my new Sigma version. But as an only lens for a full wedding? It could work, I'd just be wary on larger group shots indoors, and getting the close up shots you want on the altar without having to invade their space.

24-70 but if I was feeling brave 85mm but thats very limited for group shots

Normally would say the Sigma 24-70 2.8 but have recently been playing with the Canon 15-85 3.5-5.6. Sharp as you like but crap in low light. Makes for an interesting challenge and the extra range does come in handy. I've been compensating for the low light performance with strobe but it is less than subtle!

Have those suggesting prime lenses ever actually done a wedding as the main photographer?
(Especially the ones suggesting an 85mm............:D)

"limited for group shots" -you'd be in the next blessed county...........

There is no doubt it could be done with a wide or standard prime lens (not so long ago many photographers used medium format cameras with a fixed "standard" 80mm lens (but their photography tended to be very few, very stock photos), but a short zoom has got to be favourite.......
