If you had to buy again? (for the same ££££)

Was wondering if you had the chance to start afresh and rebuy your basic kit (e.g. camera and your first lens) for the same amount of money taking into account inflation etc. would you buy the same/equivalent again? Reason being, lately I have been wondering if I had the chance would I spend the same £1200ish as I did on my 7d and instead now, would get something more compact like a nex-7 which I would be more willing to bother to take out and use, as I currently do with my wife's nex-3?

Interesting question.

I'm happy with my D700 & D300 bodies. I'm a Nikon user simply because I had legacy lenses from my film days and it wasn't an active choice over Canon or other brands.

The only lens I've ever been disappointed with was the Sigma 150-500 - part exed this against a Nikkor 300/4 which is great.

I'm happy with my Panny LX3 & had my Fuji X100 for 6 months before selling it - loved the camera & images but I don't really do too much street photography so I wasn't using it to its potential. Put the money toward a 70-200VRII instead (along with the money from a 80-200/2.8).
 
Probably not. I think I would now go with a CSC rather than a DSLR. But, I don't regret getting a 40D when I did, and at the time the CSC didn't exist.
 
I think I might have gone for a 5D2 instead of a D700, I think I would have preferred the increased file sizes over the benefits brought by the D700.
 
At today's lens prices are you mad :bonk::bonk:, I'm glad I've got most of my kit prior to all the upheaval in the camera world, prices are overly priced. Over £2000 for a 24-70mm f2.8 lens :cuckoo::cuckoo:
 
Perfectly happy and would buy the same kit again, not bought a lens for ages and more than happy with my 7D too
 
Guess my main reason for thinking was more about being confident about wondering outside with a great big Dslr and lens which I'm not but often am happy to take the nex3 to outdoor trips or restaurants etc! But interesting that most of you would stick with your gear!
 
well, I wouldn't have the same bodies but I quite possibly would still have ended up with Sony.
My main lens is the 70-400 G & in that sort of range it's simply the best available & better than the current Canon & Nikon offerings.
& if you believe rumours it's about to get an upgrade (weather sealing, new coatings etc.)
 
Yes, because 3 years ago I evaluated the same thing and sold all my lenses and started from scratch.
 
I'd stick with my 7d but look to get the lens kit with the 24-105L with it. I'd still buy the 100mm macro lens but may go for the IS version instead, and finally I'd still buy the 50mm 1.8 and sigma 70-300mm as they're both excellent an I get lots of use out of them.
 
Well I've sold everything I started off with, so no. But then I'm in a completely different place now so can't really compare.

Lenses I'm happy with today, with the exception of probably getting a 35L next year.

Cameras I'm considering selling and switching to 5DmkIIIs at the end of the year. They aren't available now of course, so if I had nothing today - I'd probably buy a pair of mkIIs rather than the 1DmkIV and 5D I have right now.
 
Probably, but only because you're stipulating that I can only spend the same amount, adjusted for inflation.

I wanted a Nikon DSLR, and didn't like the small, entry level, bodies. The D200 was R18,000 body only (South African rand, about £1,800 at the time) which was completely out of the question for me. Canon offered the last of the 30Ds, NIB, with the 17-85mm for R7,999 and I bought one.

If I was buying my first DSLR again, and I could afford it, I'd pick Nikon; but I'd make the same choice again if I was in the same situation.
 
I'm currently changing from Canon to Nikon so yes, I would change my kit.

However I wouldn't change my first DSLR. A Samsung GX10 (Pentax K10D) adn twin lens kit for about £550 from Argos. Brilliant camera na dit taught me loads, but I never really appreciated it at the time.

I wouldn't buy different 'types' as in compact v DSLR but I would have bought what I now have and should have got in the first place - though it would have cost more initially it would have saved angst and the cost of chopping and changing!
 
I worked my way up to a Nikon D300 and a good few lenses. I sold the lot to buy m43 bodies and lenses. Good as they are, I have gradually sold them and have gone back to a D300, just getting back a few of the lenses I sold, but can't afford the really good ones again.
I suppose this was one ( expensive) way of convincing myself I had the right kit in the first place.
Anyway, everything I have now is used and cost less than what I had before.

For the same money I really don't think I bought have done better.

D200 and 35mm F1.8 work very well for me.
 
with the price i bought my D5000 kit i think i would just get a used D200 gripped and a 35mm f1.8
 
I had Nikon film kit but when going digital everyone shouted "CANON!" so that's what I got. These days if going for a DSLR I'd go for a Nikon (as IMVHO they now offer far better IQ and scope for post capture processing than Canon) or for the in body IS, a Sony.

I had a brief honeymoon with a GF1 but I realised that I just don't like shooting a serious camera without a VF so that's something else I'd change.
 
If you mean "would I re-buy the kit I have now?" then yes, I would. If the extra funds were available and a suitably-priced D3s was on offer I might change the body to that, but otherwise, I'm happy with what I have.
