If you could only have one lens what would it be and why?

I guess the lens I use the most is my Nikon 70 -200 F2.8 VR, it seems to cover most things and is superb quality. But I would not dare take it to Focus though:lol:

Zuiko 14-35mm f2. Quite possibly the best lens ever made. Got to borrow one for an afternoon once - if only I could afford my own.....

Come on, John, you can always borrow mine!

It would have to be the 14-35 or the 50-200 or the 300 depending on what day you spoke to me...

"The Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm f/2 SWD is doubtlessly one of the finest zoom lenses ever made. Its sharpness is admirable at f/2, excellent at f2.8 through f/8, and from f/11 onward it is only limited by diffraction (which does not become objectionable until you hit f/22, an aperture you will not really need to use with this lens anyway). The consistency of sharpness across the frame is remarkable at every tested focal length and aperture, with the edges being basically as sharp as the centre. Chromatic aberrations are a non-issue at 14mm, and generally very well controlled at the other focal lengths too. Light fall-off is easily noticeable at 14mm f/2, but the corners clear up very well by stopping down or zooming in. The 2.5x zoom ratio might prove a bit limiting in actual use, but both the EC-14 and the EC-20 teleconverters will work with full dedication, giving you extra flexibility without having to carry a dedicated telephoto lens along."

If it was one lens of any lens at all, then probably a 24-105 f/4L.

Out of what I have, the 70-200 f/2.8L would just pip the 17-55 f/2.8.

Canon 28-300L, I am fortunate enough to have one and whilst it is compromised in many ways if it's the only lens I'm allowed it will get me the most shots.

please dont make me choose between my sig 70-200 and my sig 120-300 :(

One lens...?

It'd have to be a 14-300mm f/1.0 weighing about 200 grammes and measuring the same as my 17-35...and with the optical performance of a Summicron 35mm f/2...
+1

imo, a pointless thread as one piece of glass just doesn't adequately cover all individual requirements..., albeit I do think 200 grammes is a gnat's chuff on the heavy side there  ;)

Thanks Andy, but I might not want to give it back! It's a truely remarkable lens that simply has no competition - it stands out on its own, head and shoulders above everything else. Oh, this is not lens lust, it's lens worship! :)

On my D90 I would say my Nikon 35mm 1.8 - just so absolutely versatile
(and as someone mentioned earlier, if you want more use "foot zoom"!:)).

Real world, 24-70 f/2.8.

Fantasyland, I'm with Rob (Arkady). With the added stipulation that it cost under £100.

Out of my bag it would be 70-200/2.8 as that is on my camera most of the time.
Wish list, would have to be 85/1.2
Dean:)

Olympus 150mm F2.... *drool*

Me too. Before switching to the Dark Side it was the 50mm 1.4 but the zoom is getting very well used. I could (but won't) live with just this one.

Nikon 16-85 VR. It is my only lens, if I can't get the picture with it I'll have to go without!
