"IF" not iphone, then what?

As a real world example I bought my HTC Touch HD when it was released almost 2 years ago, a £450 phone. I got an 18 month contract with a free HD, overall cost of contract over the 18 months was £502. Spec me an 18 month contract for £50, especially one with 600ish mins and texts and data...;)

Thank god someone else see's it how I see it!
Loads of my mates swear by "Oooh, you save X amount if you buy it outright and then go sim-only"... I always get really confused when they try and explain...

I got my HTC Hero a week after release, managed to get it for free on £25 a month with orange after kicking off saying I could get it that price elsewhere (could I hell..) 200min unlimited texts and 500mb data.

I think the HTC Hero was about £400 new? which means I would have had to find a sim-only deal that costs £2.78 a month to mean I haven't spent more than my contract currently costs me....

For me the choice is clear.
HTC phones are just great: HD2 (windows), Desire (Android)
