As above, I have had an iphone for over a year now and im just getting a little bored of it! plus since I got my latest one ive had troubles with signal and messages not coming or going through straight away because i had to jailbreak it and unlock it to accept my o2 sim card (seller on ebay didnt state it was vodafone when i bought it)

But anyway, I am baffled, I want something new, a new toy, so to speak, but i dont want to pay a fortune for it!

SO what are the best iphone alterantives, why, and how much did they cost you?

(sorry if this has been asked before but new phones seem to come out every week!)

Check out Blackberry's. You can get a Blackberry Curve 8520 for £170, probably cheaper actually. And they have just brought out a new one called the Blackberry Curve 3G (9300) which has 3G speeds and GPS along with various new editions, that will cost about £270 and if you get a 24month contract its £25 a month with the phone for free.
I don't have one... but the Blackberry Curve 3G is definitely going to be my next upgrade :)
Steve.

Or if you want to stay with touch screen, Blackberry have just released a touch screen and its called the Blackberry Torch 9800. It looks pretty slick, but you'll be coughing up the dough for it since its a recent release. In fact i don't think it has been released in the UK yet.

Im not fussed either way with a touchscreen to be honest, i would like a big ipod classic for music (as apposed to my iphone as 32gb aint enough and i use it all day) so music isnt an issue, navigation would be nice but not essential! web browsing is a must! and email is nice too, plus social networking like facebook, twitter etc, but thats about it!

A nice camera would be a big plus, but again im not too bothered, I just dont want to break that bank! when i think how much my iphone cost me and what it can do (in real life terms) it sickens me lol, I could get a blu ray laptop for the price of my iphone when new! and i know which is the more capable machine!

plus im bored of the rows of apps its been the same since i got it over a year ago, new OS comes out and its still the same! im bored of it, but i dont want a lesser phone as such!

Does anyone have exeperience of the palm pre? as there very cheap these days!!

I cannot fault my HTC Desire! :)
I paid for mine outright at 410 from car fone warehouse! :)
Its very similar specs to the IP4 but run on android (googles OS)

HTH

Android is probably the best answer to this as it does pretty much everything an iphone does and more, as its an open UI.

I have an Xperia X10, lovely phone, touch screen, 8mp camera, video, and a large touch screen. Never had a problem with them like people with iphones have.

I will be looking at HTC in the future though as i really like them.

Android are pretty mucht eh same as Iphones, with apps as they have thier own store, ok its not as big as apple but still a few hundred thousand apps.

htc desire, i was exactly in the same situation. had a iphone 3gs and got bored.... bought a desire and love it!

Depending if you want to move away from touch screen, I can't complain about my BB Bold 9700.. fantastic for email, you can download apps from the (slow) app store for free from which I have got eBay, twitter and facebook all as quick to access apps. Internet is very good too but a little bit slow at times. All I would say is it is not a 'fun' phone. No touch screen, no good for games, and simple almost un-personisable UI.. but from a business and internet/email side of things I love it :) Depends what your looking for though :)

I had considered the HTC desire, I even went and played with one in a store today, and i did like it, but battery life concerns me slightly, and the price tag, its ALOT of money still, i would be happier spending less than £300 if i could! and would prefer new (alot to ask i know)

Hence i was asking about palm pre, as I can get a new one for £219.99 from expansys

HTC HD2, great with its HD camera. amazing quality, usual apps, gps and wifi

i had considered that, but the fact it runs on windows mobile put me off slightly! i watched a few youtube videos and think it would take me some getting used to!! also my friend at work has one and he cant get through the day without charging it over lunch time coz the battery life in his words is "shocking".

Very smart phone though, just wish it was android not winmo! anyone know if current winmo phones will run the new windows 7 mobile OS?

HTC Wildfire, Runs android like the desire and has HTC sense theme so not overlay different. Just loose a bit of power. Get a 16gb memory card for it and youre off.

u can put android in it. altho its windows its nothin like the older HTC models. its quite like the iPhone. batt will drain if you have wifi etc on all the time. my batt last fpr days if im not hittin it heavy with online stuff. an incar charger is a good idea ***. very very handy. i blagged that and a 8gb mem card for free.lol

the wildfire i looked into also, but i dunno if id miss my 3GS too much if i got that! I would love the desire but its a little more than im comfortable spending on a phone!

The HD2 is looking quite appealing the more i look at it, but theres something about windows mobile and the guy at work saying the battery life is terrible that niggles me!

It seems there is no "perfect" phone lol

Dell Streak! if you get it on contract you won't notice how much it costs :)

contracts are a false economy, you pay for the phone in the hiked up monthly rate, far cheaper to buy the phone outright and have a sim only deal!

i would love a desire, but there too much money, i cant justify it! id rather stay bored with my 3GS that have it cost me a fortune, i just thought i could have a change for the value of my iphone second hand! as it has a year warranty on it!

i went through this a couple of weeks ago when my contract ended, seriously considered an iphone but went with a nokia e72 instead as i hate touchscreens... it does everything i want it to, it has a proper (non touchscreen) qwerty keyboard and it even has wifi! camera's not too bad either, i tend to use my phone camera as a notebook and go back with a proper camera later... but can't fault it so far, it's fabulous. also has satnav and apps, not that i've used any of them yet

i had one of those before my iphone, i liked it, i used to run garmin on it :) but i have chunky/fat fingers and struggled texting lol (thankfully the iphone when in landscape is a huge keyboard, and if i spell it wrong it seems to know and speaks my language! lol

The desire price is making me lean to an iphone 4, which is bad lol!

my daughter has just bought the Wildfire, £180, and it seems a brilliant little phone.
the touch screen is nearly as good as the iphone and it seems quick enough online.

the screen isnt as good as the desire, but then its £200 cheaper.
i myself am waiting for the new Blackberry, but as an earlier poster said, it will cost a mint as handset only for the first few months

HTC HD2, great with its HD camera. amazing quality, usual apps, gps and wifi

I got a HD2 about a week ago.
It is incredible.
I've just flashed mine with a custom ROM (O/S) which is kinda the same as the old Windows 6.5 but faster, more stable, more customizable and just generally better.
6.5 is still running in the background, but it's lost the er, Windows 6.5ism about it ( :cuckoo: I know what I mean!!!)

It seriously is a whole lot of phone.
As reasons Kev said above, and the music player is just mind blowing.
I play mine through my car stereo, and it sounds just incredible. Knocks the spots off my old iPhone!!

Oh and Android CAN run on it........... :naughty:

To flash the HD2 is very straightforward. You just need to know what you are doing.
All the info on it can be found (eventually!) on the XDA developers site.
Took me a few days to a) read all the gumph about it and b) to pluck up the courage to do it (doing it wrong can 'brick' the phone!)

Give it a try.
If you don't like it, sell it and get something else :D

GL, Andy

I thought long and hard about what to do, and then bought iphone 4, it will do me till the end of my contract, then we'll see if the rest are up to speed!

As i still feel iphone is the most complete package!

HTC Desire.

Love it.

I know that you didn't want to go on contract, but I ended up with it for nowt, paying £15pcm (18m) and I get unl txt, 600min and 1Gb internet with fair usage policy. All after talking to Vodafone for 15 min.

£270 all in and the calls/txt/internet .... made sense to me. New ones come with Froyo.

tom tom on the iphone 4 is excellent
loads of holders with a charger lead on ebay for 6-50 and the battery life is so much better than the 3gs etc

i want a camera to be a camera, a phone to be a phone, a computer to be a computer. get your life back, buy a phone

move with the times richard
my phone makes and receives calls
it gets my emails when out and about
its a web browser when i need it
it has a great camera and hd video capabilities
it has sat nav that is as good as the best stand alone sat nav units you can buy
all in the one device

and you think thats a good thing?

"im just appreciating the view of the beautiful mountain and.. beep you have an email - very important..."

Seconded, (needed to update the camera software but once that was done it was so much better). It is a good alternative to the iphone.

I just changed my iphone 3GS for a HTC desire, basically a straight swap money wise. I too was getting bored of iphones after 2 & 1/2 years, The desire is near enough iphone spec but a lot cheaper, I bought mine for £285 delivered off here..

Dell Streak! if you get it on contract you won't notice how much it costs :)

I also have a Streak - it's brilliant.

Another vote for the HD2.

I'm running a miri ROM with Elegancia customisations, looks & runs sweet

Good reviews and someone at work has the Samsung Galaxy S, very fast, free music, light and cheaper

O2 were selling the Desire for £285 to existing O2 contract users, I assume they still are. Might be worth a look as I think you said you were on O2?

I disagee totally. The only reason I'm on contract is because it's cheaper than a sim only contract. An 18 month contract can usually be had for around the same amount as a phone sim free (for example the Desire or HD2).

As a real world example I bought my HTC Touch HD when it was released almost 2 years ago, a £450 phone. I got an 18 month contract with a free HD, overall cost of contract over the 18 months was £502. Spec me an 18 month contract for £50, especially one with 600ish mins and texts and data...;)

I have to go somewhere on a train tomorrow, followed by a walk through a town. For the first time in about 2 years I've had to jot down train times, location route on a bit of paper and look on google maps, my smartphone is broken. :(

I also have a Streak - it's brilliant.

So tempted by that at the moment, I was tempted at release but the recent 2.1 update is really swaying it for me. Just every time I go and look at it the HD2 draws me to it, with it's slightly smaller screen and much thinnerness... Also the release of the Desire HD and WinPho's is holding me back.
