Idiot cyclist.....

See that all the time in Aberscoh, idiots go the wrnog way down the one way system because they can't be bothered going round with the rest of the traffic, many a time I've come up against one.

Psycholists...

It would be better to have contraflow cycle lanes if possible - I live on a one way street and getting to my own home would mean a long detour so most cyclists tend to use the pavement for safety but an official contra flow would make more sense, especially as there is ample room. I have noticed a lot of local one way streets could easily be made 2 way if parking was banned in places, and some one way streets even have 2 lanes pointlessly going the same way rather one lane in each direction.

What, ban parking so there's room for more cyclists!? Have you completely lost your mind man? :D

My son-in-law is a keen cyclist and the photo of the bin lorry trailing across the cycle lane is not of an unusual incident. He was put in hospital by an idiot driver that over took him and then immediately turned left!

The idiot cyclist in the first post deserves all he gets riding like that. Definitely gives other cyclists a bad name. Sadly that isn't unusual either.

Motorists and cyclists need to show rather more respect towards one and other, and to the rules of the road IMHO.

This is just one of the many solutions Derby City Council put in, presumably to achieve their quota of cycle lanes. Cycle lanes against the flow of traffic.

I'd rather be on a cycle lane against the flow of traffic rather than with the flow. At least you can see what's coming and react accordingly. Much like walking down a country road with no footpath.

I used to cycle to work in a previous job.
One evening, waiting at the lights, another cyclist shot straight past me across the junction.
"Y'know bikes don't have to stop at red lights?" he yelled over his shoulder at me.:facepalm::facepalm:

Let's see now... No air bag, no seat belt, no hardened steel safety cage, and I'm the crumple zone.
Stopping seems like a good idea.

Where do they learn this c**p?

I had a similar scenario on a commute once.
The cyclist ahead of me was running all the red lights where there was no junction on the left.
I eventually caught and passed him on a long straight.
When stopped at the next red light he proceeded to continue right through.

At that point my blood boiled and i shouted "what you doing ya f*****g p***k red means stop!"
He then stopped and tried to make up some rubbish argument against me about cycling to close to the van i was following when i overtook him. Needless to say i told the p***k he was a bad example to cyclists and to jog on.

The junction where I got yelled at was a crossroads...

At another crossroads (I was on foot this time), I saw a teen on a BMX riding non-handed with hands in pockets come down the hill and go through a red light at high speed.
A car with right of way took out his rear wheel and he landed on his face.
Ambulance time...
Driver was getting questioned, document checked, breathalysed...
No wonder they hate cyclists.

Contra flow cycle lanes could get dangerous at any junction as a car pulling out of a side road might not expect traffic to be coming from the other direction so they only really make sense on short sections of one way street without intermediate junctions.

Never really understood why cyclists shout at other cyclists who run red lights - it would be like me driving along a motorway at exactly 70mph and honking and flashing madly at each car that overtook me.

I think its called foolishly trying to re-educate those that are breaking the highway code and ultimately the law.
Its also because its their blatent disregard for the law that gives law abiding cyclists a bad name amd it is that part that makes the red mist descend for me.......but yes technically i shouldnt bother myself.

Yes. There's a lot of them on down my way in city one-way back streets. 1 way for cars. 2 way for bikes. The cars benefit from having more bikes on the roads. If we were all in cars, it would be gridlock. Which bikes rarely cause, and are rarely held up by, with the bike lanes.

MK is covered in "Red ways" ( guess what colour they are "painted"? :D ) they largely run parallel to the roads but separated but a grass bank and trees / hedges.
They criss cross the city, so you can get anywhere without crossing a road, due the underpasses.

Most cyclists use them, but swear at the pedestrians, who in turn swear at the cyclists for using them..
They were dedicated for both to use..

Well that is apart from the idiot I saw the other day, using a "very fast" duel carriageway happily cycling down the centre of one lane, and the red way was 50 feet away, and would have not added any time to his journey. However, the few seconds I was in the following traffic, cars were swerving in and out past him.
Plenty of near misses with him and other vehicles too!

Duel carriageway sounds apt for Cyclists battling with motorists... Front bumpers at dawn! :)

And the worst of it is, that particular duel carriage way is a major trunk road, East / West M1 - M40 link up, used by HGV's of all sizes (and nationalities, but lets not go there :D )

He really was putting himself in danger!

I know I'm being a pedant (and I hate myself already for being so), but maybe you meant dual carriageway, not duel carriageway?

Though maybe duel is more accurate in this case. ;)

I think he meant "duel" :)

Great film Duel. Steven Spielberg's first full length feature film. But so watchable still today.

Lol damn that auto correct it conspires against me :D
But yes either is applicable around my neck of the woods, especially at rush "hour" :D (which of course these days is very much a misnomer ;))

It's because the process of Darwinian selection is un-necessarily harsh on the poor drivers that eliminate defective individuals from the general population.

Cycling on the pavement doesn't *have* to mean peds must get out of the way, however if it's the same kind of cyclist that runs red lights then heaven help anyone on foot.

I'm very comfy with cycling on a pavement, but would not expect to treat it like a road.

I'm very comfy with cycling on a pavement,

what other laws are you very happy with breaking, just out of interest?

Never really understood why cyclists shout at other cyclists who run red lights

Cause they have the good sense to realise, that those who run the red lights §do considerable damage to the perception of all cyclists

In Hamburg the cycleways are on the pavement (sidewalk). As a pedestrian you are obliged to give way to cyclists.

As always, there are sensible and considerate pedestrians cyclists and motorists, as well as careless, inconsiderate and dangerous ones.

Some pedestrians and cyclists even cross the road on a red pedestrian light! Gosh!

The laws are just trying to keep people safe and prevent people from causing accidents. If you are out and about by whatever means, you should assume that someone will do something daft. Even if you do have right of way.

In Britain, we don't like to do as we are told. There are two behaviours that are poorly observed across our society: compliance and respect. If only that were not the case.

at least he is on 2 wheels, most people on bikes round here seem to just wheelie everywhere, with or against traffic it dosnt seem to matter to them

Safety? for whom? the pedestrians that have to step into the road to get out of the way of the cyclists?
As a cyclist I am no wider that most pedestrians and will always give way to pedestrians - I would never expect a pedestrian to step into the road - if i were to dismount I would occupy twice the amount of pavement so would be even more of a hazard to pedestrians
