Morning folks!

Ok now that I have purchased a Canon 50D the 1000D has been handed down to the mrs along with the 18-55 IS lens (although I will borrow it now and again until I get something permanet for the 50D).

After christmas I plan on spending approx 200 notes on a walkabout lens for me.
I am quite happy to buy second hand and was looking for other peoples recommendations.

One that sprung to mind for me was the 17-85mm. Whats it like as a lens?
Anyhting I should consider from Sigma or Tamron?

Cheers!

I've got myself a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for Christmas and am pleased with the test shots I took with it, till it was put away till Christmas day.

Sigma 17-70mm is a decent all rounder, has done me well with my 40D.

I'd recomend getting a 50mm 1.8 prime if you can, its awesome and can be had for £60 used, £90ish new! Then get a zoom to go with it, Sigma or the Tamrom suggested above.

If you want a little extra reach from time to time, there's the Canon 24-105 L. Lived on my 50D before I upgraded to the 5D. Superb lens.

Its not £200 though is it, not even remotely close!

Not overly fussed about reach. I f I need to zoom further I will switch to the 70-200 F4L
Just looking for something that I can attach to the camera predominantly like the 18-55 was always attached to the 1000D.

Tamron 17-50mm or Sigma then (17-50 or 17-70)

And consider the 50mm prime 1.8 as an addition.

Done :)

Definitely Tamron 17-50 f/2.8! The Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 comes in closely behind it, but to get a better walkabout of that range you need to go for the Canon 17-55 IS, and that costs a whole heap of cash more.

Or you can sacrifice the f/2.8 for an extra 20mm, and get the Sigma 17-70, but personally I very rarely used the 50-70mm range, so it was a no-brainer :)

Thanks for the advice so far guys, give some lens to go and look at.
