Idea for a shot....will it work?

Planning something for my 52 photo this week....cant say exactly but basically my plan is to take a self portrait in my garden once it goes dark.

Camera will be tripod mounted, 40d + 70-200
I will be a few metres away side on for a head and shoulders shot.
Going to mount my 430ex on a tripod and have it directly in front of me.
Flash will be fired using my cheap triggers so will have to set flash power manually.

I want no ambient light so intend to go manual at 1/250th

Confused as to what f stop to set or will it not matter?

As you are using the flash on manual, you will need to take a light reading with a meter to determine the aperture....... or do some test shots and chimp

You could also calculate using the flash guide number.

yes flash will have to be on manual as my cheapo wireless triggers do not support ettl...

i was thinking of starting off with flash on 1/4 power and f/5.6 - no reason - just a guess

I will have the advantage of also being able to move the flash further away or nearer to me....

I really like that! The ambient is spot on I reckon. Could you have pumped up the flash power a little maybe? You look a little dark, would be good to see a little bit more detail.

I want to get out and have a go now!
