Idea - Film Photo Showcase Thread

Paul,

Looking at the recent selected photos for that thread, they are technically excellent and of a quality (with maybe the help of PP?) that I'm not sure film can compete with.

H'mm for example ?

I don't see it as "competing" as such - though I think some of you may be surprised at how many film shots actually get nominated each week (and no, that's not because I nominate 3-4 of them!)

Agreed... competing probably not best term.

And yes with photoshop film shots can be enhanced by tweaking contrast, tones, curves, sharpening etc. But does it need more than such simple tweaks to obtain the same results from film? Or does it need more advanced digital artistry skills?

I'm still of the opinion that a separate film photo of the week showcase is a good idea, as I'm sure I miss some of the photos in the various threads when I don't check the forum for a couple of days.

and THAT's my entire reasoning behind canvassing opinion on this Steve... as frankly, I miss stuff every now and then (as borne out by my fellow staff members nominating film shots that I've not noticed... and I hang out in here a lot more than some of the regulars...)

I think it's a great idea, I'm always lurking in here and I still miss a lot of shots.

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=514303

anybody spots something, PM me with a link to the "single post" that it's in (and with a pointer to the image concerned if the single post has a number of shots in there)

ETA : Oh - and if you could contain yourself to shots posted from Today onwards... I know there's been some fantastic stuff in the past, and I will try and dig some up when I get time to add them in, but basically, the whole showcase is more about going forward :-)

Anything from further back, make a note of it, and maybe link to it if I get chance to start a "Best Fillum Shots of 2013" thread maybe mid-December ;)

Blimey, that was a bit of a shock.....honoured to be included, thank you.

Andy

Thanks for setting this up Mark....great idea and achieved exactly what was wanted....I hadn't seen 2 of the first 4 posted and they are all well worthy of inspection.

Glad it's working so far... it's down to all of us to keep an eye out and nominate when we spot something decent - bear in mind, they're just some of the ones I've managed to spot over the last few weeks of trawling the forums for nominations for the forum-wide photo of the week...

Nick, I played with your sunset shot, do you want me to post it to see what you think (you'll get a shock  )....so many other very good shots posted and sometimes just need 10 secs and a click to make a difference.
Josh's shots are excellent because I would think he spends some time presenting them well, and apologies Josh if they are straight from the scanner. :exit:

Aye, go on Brian stick it up here. I've just given those negs to Mr Hooley so will be good to compare.

Trumpet fanfare...you'll like it or hate it:-

I've just been through the file you passed me, the only slide you've given me is well exposed Velvia 100 from Dungeness.

And to return the thread back to it's original topic for a moment...

The initial shots in the thread were basically the ones I had easily to hand, as they were the nominations for Photo of the Week...

I've managed to go back and add a couple more images to "flesh out" the thread going back a little further. Please note everyone, the recent additions are purely the ones that took my eye in a quick browse through the massive "show us" thread - purely my personal taste - it's down to YOU to keep PM'ing me with NEW images posted that you think are worthy additions...

H'mm Mark.... many of us think out own shots are great, but others see things differently and on forums even pros and semi pros put their shots up, to see what the members think esp to decide which shot looks best to go on an advertisement blurb.....so you and other mods are the best judges as you are all drifting over the forums and get an overall picture (could be a pun) of shots posted.

You're missing the point as usual Brian.

I'm not everywhere. I don't see everything. I'd never nominate a "street" or "cute kiddie" shot.

TP is a community - it only works when people put something back into the community. Sitting back waiting for the staff to spoonfeed you will only result in the thread stagnating. If you don't want to nominate things fine, that's your choice. But don't complain that the shots aren't to your taste

Oh well you are not seeing my point and what works and doesn't....so one of us thinks we have taken a great shot (and others would think it's carp  ) so the poster emails you and suggests it should be nominated for the photo of the week...OR... someone else emails you and says "take a look at joe blogg's shot".
So at the end it's your decision anyway no matter how you are informed or see it yourself by browsing and even if in a poll, everyone thinks a kiddie shot is terrific.

Well, first off, I'd presume that common decency would preclude anyone from nominating their own shot.

As to nominations - if I get 6 people all saying somethings fantastic, even if I think it's the most vile looking pile of fetid dingo's kidneys ever committed to celuloid, I wouldn't presume to argue with the consensus.

I initially said "what I propose is whichever shot gets the most votes gets into the FPOTW (fillum picture of the week) thread. In the event of a tie, former POTY winners votes count double, and if there's still a tie, i'll have the casting vote."

the only part that's changed is that I've changed the name of it, and allowed myself a little leeway in nominating more than one if the images are too good to pass over (or none at all one week, if I'm not around to organise it) Yes, it DOES give me a small amount of "extra" say in what goes in there (a very small perk for doing all the organising collating and posting I'd say), but frankly I resent the fact that you seem to think that I'm not open to other peoples suggestions.

I wouldn't nominate them for this particular thread, no, as I hate them with a passion - but someone else may, and if they did, I'd listen...

(I can't help it, BTW, I just can't "see" street stuff, it just looks like the camera went off when you were winding it... sorry and all, just don't get it:shrug:)

I don't think the idea is to nominate your own image, and, I feel that that should not be allowed anyway.
But, if you see an image that really stands out for you, then you nominate it....
As some have pointed out, they had not seen some of those images that have been included already(I certainly hadn't).... and, some of them had been posted in other sections of the forum, sections I wouldn't necessarily have visited....
And, if only mods were allowed to nominate, then they would nominate only what is of interest to them....but, if anyone can nominate an image to be included, then at least a broader selection of genres will be/should be seen hopefully.
That's my taken on it anyway.

I think it's a great idea.

Too many fantastic film images get overlooked.

It will be fantastic to showcase the best of what can be achieved on film.

Well I agree in that I don't visit the digital forums much, and on other sites that are mainly digital, just have fun getting close or equaling the quality of their shots with my film shots....mind you they don't take much notice, as what you take on film doesn't mean much to a one track digital mind, and I suppose would have to admit those shots from digital cameras doesn't mean much to me as I don't use a DSLR. :)

That's exactly it Lee, Glad I'm not just on my own with this... I was beginning to wonder if I was wasting my time.

Cheers Simon - that's it in a nutshell - I think there are some fantastically talented shooters in this section, and it's a shame that their stuff occasionally gets buried amongst the chatter and banter (pleasant / enjoyable as that may be) in the discussion area threads.

I look forward to seeing your nominations when something catches your eye :)

I see where you're coming from, in that as I have only shot digital until recently, I never ventured into F&C, nor into the 'photos from film' thread (as I wasn't interested in film, to be honest I wasn't aware that film could produce such good images).
I think the idea (as with the film of the week thread, which is predominantly digital images) is to get members to appreciate each others chosen medium.

Just visited the thread with the photos and they really are great, and another couple there that I missed first time around.

I think the nomination procedure outlined above makes perfect sense.

Just to clarify do you want us to nominate any photos from earlier in 2013?

If so, I'll have a search for my two favourite images of 2013...one was Osh pony and the other apologies but forget the photographer, but was of a candid of a model and had a really lovely sixties Brigitte Bardot feel to it.

Well I only mentioned the digital bit as film users are up against some stiff opposition on this and other site's digital forums (one member has already mentioned this)...and would say quite a lot of them are good using Photoshop, lightroom, Corel or whatever.
Once you see the competition it's no good posting spotty or hairy, under\over exposed film shots as it ruins an excellent shot that could be a winner :)......and esp if the judges prefer squeaky clean digital shots

Well, all I can say is that having looked at the 'film showcase' thread, there were at least two images that I was sure were digital(so I went and checked lol).
A squeaky clean digital shot does not necessarily a good image make....and, there are more members than mods, so, it stands to reason that if more members nominate, then that's for the better.

Well maybe squeaky clean digital users can pop over here to vote :)

Thanks for having a go Brian, it doesn't work for me although I don't see colours the same as other folk, it has a pronounced green tinge, but that could be my perception or my monitor or a combination of both and it also has a bit of an HDR look to it, sorry :(

Damn, I thought I'd put those in there, I'll dig them out and send them up.

And to return the thread back to it's original topic for a moment...

Apologies to TBY for bumbling off topic again but if it helps to get it back on track, I still think it's a cracking idea and believe there's actually more crossover between film and digi users than we would think, I swap between the two ways quite often. Of course I always end up going back to the one true way ;)

Its a fantastic idea and I think some people should just move away and let it stand as it is. No point in arguing over something that the VAST majority agree with.

Very wise and sage-like Mr Snap

My wisdom knows no bounds... call me Yoda you may.

That's a rather sizeist remark :nono:

I knew you were small and had hairy ears but I don't remember you being green! :p

And as to the idea I think it is great as it is! Now, lets see if I have any worthy on those 2 rolls of acros that found their way into my tank over the weekend...

Except you can't nominate your own, Jim!
