A vintage Bi-plane has just flown over our flat, It was about the same size as a Dakota but only one engine I did run and grab the camera only to get the most oof shot ever (will post if I am forced lol) it was shadowed by two other light aircraft which looked like cessnas it was over Scunthorpe .... Ideas or did anyone else spot them :shrug:

It looks like De Havilland but not the dragonfly that has wing engines
 
Body is the wrong shape and the wing struts look too thin for it to be that I think.
 
Definitely Antonov AN2. There's at least one does displays here. Russian (obviously). Made in their thousands. Big radial engine, sounds lovely. Got close to and inside one at a small airfield in the then Yugoslavia years ago.
 
I have a thing for planes ever since seeing an Antanov AN-225, it was delivering steam trains to the carribean and stopped in Manchester to refuel. It was an amazing site and have been looking out for them ever since :thumbs: All the formula one cars are shipped round the world in an AN-124 iirc.

My brother wanted to go to Antanov airport but was refused a visa :(
 
Antonov An2 in formation with Tiger Moth over Sherburn-in-Elmet about 20 years ago. It used almost as much oil per hour as Avgas! Happy Days.
A real gentle giant, the Polish sales brochure (as many were made by PZL) says they can be flown by pilots of minimal experience! (excuse poor scan quality BTW.)

I'm thinking the Antonov has a much more pronounced curve to the underside, the one in the image seems to have a squarer bodyshape all round.
 
Steep - it's an AN2. I've taken enough pictures of them over the years and seen them close up to know. Two of my pictures below from Yugoslavia. Note the way the struts angle in from top to bottom, the tailplane struts, the huge fin, and the trailing flap visible on the wing in Dangermouse's photo. There is no other biplane of this size around. It's the biggest single engined one ever made.

Hokay, maybe it's the paint job on the wiki one that makes it look curvier :)
 
Dangermouse they're quite rare in the UK I think those based here have to be on the Hungarian register now?(EASA rules change weekly!) Very common in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, Cuba, South America, Africa etc. Over were 18'500 built between 1947-1990?
