First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who has encouraged me thus far, not just on TP, but my family and my friends. Even though I cant always see it myself, quite a few people have commented on how far they think I have come in just under a year, and I am chuffed to bits :)

A year ago, almost to the day, I shot my dads wedding. It was a mess. I had to be in the photos, and take them at the same time, people were getting in the way, all eyes in every shot were looking in different directions... chalk it up to experience I guess, but after shooting my first "official" wedding last week, even I am surprised with my progress.

I want to show you all a shot I took a while back, I was well pleased with this, I thought it was dead arty :D

So, just a bit of advice for the newbies, you bloody well stick at it! The rewards you get are really something :):)

Well done Dee :) stick with it - loads of fun to be had yet :D

Seeing your recent wedding shots it's impossible to believe that you ever took some poor ones.

I've only been a member here for a short while but my experience echoes everything that you say: stick at it, the rewards are great and the help to be found here is invaluable

go Betty go
I've seen an improvement with each post
so yup
you're right
hang in there
it can only get better!

Very wise words, Betty. I've come across some of your pictures and am well impressed by them. Actually, will admit to being surprised when you said you've only been at it for a year!
We all had to start somewhere. True, some of us might have been doing it since we can hold a camera as a baby, others might have only just got onto the act due to the cheapness and simplicity of digital photography, but the main thing is to accept your own work as something that is unique to you. That's how I view my own stuff. Oh we've all produced some stinkers every now and then but we need our mistakes, otherwise how are we gonna learn?
I've got into the woolly world of digital photography since I got my first digital camera in 2002 (a floppy based 1.3 mp Sony Macevia) and have enjoyed every moment of it since then, with no sign of me running out of steam or ideas.

Spot on

Its weird, crap photos like the one in the OP, I was well chuffed with, I thought they were fab, and I used to go mad when people said they didn't like them, cos I thought they were perfect.

Now, there is a *slight* (;)) improvement to my work, and I don't think they are as good as some people make me think. Like I said not long ago, I like my work, but I don't love it yet :)

I've only been here for about 3 weeks and I've learnt loads already. Friendliest, most helpful site on the whole intrawebthingy...:thumbs:

Awesomeness

Looked back on some of my old photos from last year, and was literally sat laughing. It's a great feeling. :)

It's almost been a year since I took some photographs of my partner and sons on a beach in Great Yarmouth and decided I'd like to give photography a try. I got my first DSLR in February. Have taken many many crap shots and thought of giving up many times but think like you Betty I've come a long way.

If I had a glass of wine I'd propose a toast to you and all of us who took up the baton not so long ago and have run a good long race but still have a little further to go!

Cheers Betty :clap::clap:

It's a long journey from a key fob to an entire wedding for two women. That's a lot of steps and I wanted to see if there was a point where you took a giant stride forward. I had a look through your posted work from the first self portraits to now. For me, the turning point set were the candles round the bath. That set seems so different from your other work that it stands out as a dramatic change in what you did and how you did it.

There are a number people on here that I have noticed over the past few months make great strides with their photography. It’s good to see how people develop and expand their ideas and try something new.

I’ve have leant a great deal on here and I’m old, so hope for us all.

What makes this site so special is the honest, but polite, C+C. My special thanks to all those that have helped me in this way with my shots over the past few months.

I would like to make a special mention for Russell. He more than most takes the time to C+C peoples work with honest forthright helpful comments.

Here here! Do you sit clicking the "Unanswered post" button? ;)

Thanks the nice words, I appreciate them deeply. From time to time, I see posts that I cannot comment on for lack of knowledge so I leave them to people who know more than I do.

Whenever I log on, I do go to the Unanswered Posts first. If I am sat in my hotel room, then I might be logged on for hours and when a new post appears in Home with 0 replies, I go look. I am usually logged on in rush hour (about 7 to 10) and so I get to lots of posts first by accident. I think my nights of sitting in a hotel room will end soon, so I'll do less commenting than I did.

You are right Betty, this place has got a lot to answer for! :)

I did the Open Uni course on digital photography because I wanted to rekindle my love of photography. If I'm going to choose one hobby to have in life, this is it. But this place has been more of an education that I ever thought possible.

From Russells' C&C to Pete's HDR work and brilliant tutorials and Garry Edwards banging on about lighting (only kidding Garry, you have no idea how much it has helped!) I've learned a heck of a lot. Good grief, just being exposed to work from the likes of WeddingHack and Hacker has been a real inspiration, not to forget EdinburghGary's unbelievable 365.........I could go on for hours!

In a year I've gone from tentatively putting a DSLR on Av to being comfortable shooting in any mode I damn well choose if it gets me the result, manual flash, studio lighting (that I'm still crap at!) and I'll have a go at just about anything!

The important part is that I'm still learning too. Thanks to you lot. :)

That was a huge step for me, going fully manual!

It used to be all Auto and JPEG, now its all manual and all RAW :D
