Hiya all, have to do a group discussion on the semiotics of a photograph.

Now i am quite happy to break it down but was hoping you lovely people wouldnt mind giving me a bit of help actually finding the photo initially?

In our preparation lectures we studied Jamie Oliver a lot, looking at how the photographer has put over the fact he is a cockney chef and how he has done that - i.e cooking utensils hanging dell-boy like on the inside of his jacket. London backstreets and chef whites, that sort of thing.

so whats your favourite photo, preferably portrait and preferably something that gives us food for thought.

Cheers

Hmm... semiotics - I had to look that one up.

The study of signs and symbols. The Jamie Oliver idea is an interesting one, although I'd like to clarify - does the photo you describe actually exist? I would have thought Mr Oliver would be unlikely to pose in such a way as to imply he's a wide boy.

However, a portrait did spring to mind which could be a rich source of semiotic study, courtesy of the very talented Mr Morgan Penn. It's a painting not a photo I'm afraid, but it is a portrait.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this link:

Bang!

It's even more striking in the flesh.

Hope this helps! I'll keep a look out for actual photos if you can't bend the rules.

yes it does exist, its in his 'Jamie at Home' book

we studied it in lesson :)

Thanks for the link checking now

thanks Squizza but i am far more interested in this Morgan Penn sort of thing, something with a bit of flair and stuff that we can talk about.

The advert is good an all but i dont know what we could say about it, other than that is of a girl wearing nike clothing somewhere between 1995 and 2009

We are able to do adverts, break them down and have a look at them like that, but probably not a nike advert :)

The advert is about signs and symbols. Thats the point about adbusters - they have changed the original nike advert to have the tick strangling the woman and bringing her down. A comment on advertising and society.

sorry i didnt see that at first! Thought it was just a Nike advert - doesnt help that my boyfriend decided to have a huge go at me and be a pain just as i was opening it :( :(

Will have a closer look, definatly looks like a goer though as we can talk about the implications of what they have done.

Thanks for explaining it more - sorry for my thick skull!

My...not 'favourite' but one I always think of when responding to this sort of thing is Arnold Newman's Portrait of German Industrialist Alfred Krupp...

Alfried+Krupp.jpg

Taken for Newsweek in 1963. Krupp is made to look like Mephistopheles: smirking, his fingers clasped as he confronts the viewer against the background of an assembly line in the Ruhr.
The impression it leaves was no accident: Mr. Newman (a Jew) knew that Krupp had used slave labor in his factories during the Nazi reign and that he had been imprisoned after World War II for his central role in the Nazi war machine...

Hey Ark - your description was really interesting but i cant see the picture :)

OF COURSE IT IS!!! sorry arent i rubbish :) its great - thank you - might be risky to do a painting though :P

Ark-y - that is a very powerful image, very interesting with brilliant sub-text :)

thank you xx

Try looking at Annie Leibovitz's celebrity portraits. Probably plenty to talk about there.

hey ark, I had heard about this image, but I never actually seen it. many many thanks

Like wise. In fact, it's totally different how I'd envisaged it. For one it's colour but also it looks very 'now' and not 40 years old at all.

Right i have put forth the Krupp as my favourite one to study, hopefully the other two members of the group will agree :) :)

Semiotics, also called semiotic studies or semiology, is the study of sign processes (semiosis), or signification and communication, signs and symbols, and is usually divided into three branches:

* Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their denotata
* Syntactics: Relations among signs in formal structures
* Pragmatics: Relation between signs and their effects on those (people) who use them
