Hi Folks, I have a week off next week and was trying to figure out what to do with it. Well in a moment of inspiration and possibly madness I decided to go to Iceland for a few days :woot: , Monday to Friday (Yes, Ian, Sorry I didn't mention this, but it was all a rather sudden decicision), Anyway, I have lots of photograpy targets in mind, but would really like, depending on the weather and barrels of luck, to have a go at the Northern Lights. Does anyone have any advice on these, I'm assuming i'll be shooting long exposures but not much more of a clue than that.

Also can anyone think of any locations worth visiting?

Thanks
Dave

I hear good things about the pizzas and frozen veg..

:coat:

No useful advice here either unless you are dyslexic and meant Ireland
I just wanted to say what a lucky [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] you are - I'd love to go there

:agree: with (most) of the above;)

Oddly enough, I just decided yesterday to take a trip there - after easter probably which means i'll miss the nothern lights, but should get some melt-water :)

Would love to hear of your experiences when you get back

... couple of pairs of thick socks and a wooly hat

(I wanna go.... buuuhhh!)

Flippin blinking b****** ! lol

Just cant get the family these days can you !

Ill have to see about lending you the 17-40, 100-400 and 50 F1.8 ! ;)

Just need to find a tripod a decent size and weight to go in a hard case !

Okay, So it looks like i'll be writing the first draft of "Photographing the Aurora Borealis in Iceland" for TalkPhotography.

I'll be taking

Canon 350d + bg-e3
Sigma 70-200 ex DG f2.8 + 1.4x convertor
Canon 50mm f1.8
4gb of memory cards

All this will go in a mini trecker aw and go on as hand lugage

+

2 batteries
Charger
A tripod of some sort
Plus anything I can persuade bruv to lend me, I doubt the 600mm would fit in an overnight bag though, Shame...

All this will go in my "Weekend bag" with clothes , washing gear, etc.

My photographic intentions are.

Aurora Borealis
Reykjavik street scenes and Harbour
Geysir
Blue Lagoon
Dettifoss
pingvellir
Lake Myvatn

Puffins, Gryfalcon, Arctic Fox, Ptarmigan

yes and they do some great two for the price of one deals :help:

Have a great time.... Looks like you're going to be a bit busy!!

A stout pair of boots would be good too - all that lava is punishing on regular rubber.

Have fun.

I have no advice, but would love to hear about your trip when you get back.
As I may look at going for a week ( self drive 4 nights £440 :) ) I'd like to know about the cost of thing out there, like food, fuel, dining out and so on.

Cheers and have a good trip.

I went two years ago, for 5 days. Didn't have a decent camera in those days, so just point and shoot stuff (in my gallery). Wonderful scenery and lovely people but boy is it expensive!!!! Two beers cost us a weeks wages. Have a great time.

I notice you say you're taking a camera bag and a weekend bag. Just for the record, BAA are only allowing one piece of hand luggage per passenger. It's out of the airlines hands. I got caught out at security with my camera bag and laptop. I managed to convince the supervisor to let me strap the bags together to count as one but it took a good bit of persuasion.

Bring me a young mum back would ya :D Preferably Kerry Katona if she's about :D.....:naughty:

Okay, I'm back, Brilliant time, Kanckered and so won't be posting any pics today, But here is some of the practicalities type info that Whiteflyer was asking about.

Beer 600 - 700 ISk or £4.50-£5.30
Petrol 110 Isk per litre or £0.84

Dining Out
Basic Pasta meal, In my case Penne Arrabiata in a bog standard restaurant 1,950 Isk or £15.00
A meal for 1 including Soup of the day, Hallibut and jacket potato and 1 beer 4,000 Isk or £30.70
Indian meal in a place that looked like a cafe, About the same
Fish and chips 870 Isk £6.67
1/5 litre can of coke 230 Isk £1.76
Subway and Quiznos Sub's 870 Isk or £6.67

So nice and cheap then,

On the plus side, While wandering about the main town square on my last night I came across a free concert by some French guy who played Organ pipes with Blow torches, I then wandered into a basement where I could hear live music and listened to a bunch of local young bands playing really good rock/punk, Got talking to some Icelanders who told me to head for a bar called Prikid for something similar. Did that and got invited to sit with them, Sat watching a couple of bands, No fee to get in, Bought one beer all night. (you buy your own drink only in Iceland, It's too expensive otherwise), I only found out afterwards that the bands playing were the current number 1 and 2 in the Icleandic charts.

So things are expensive but entertainment is pretty free.

If you are going in the summer hire a car and camp, Every Icelander goes camping in the summer.

Will tell you more once I wake up.
