Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy S2

Instal Kies and connect phone to computer via USB and not wirelessly and Kies will invite you to update, takes about15 mins and battery must be fully charged

Hi, sorry to be a pain...but I've installed Kies, connected phone via USB and it's showing in Kies under 'Connected devices' and it is showing as 'This is the latest firmware' but no invite to update

Any advice?

Cheers.

Just downloaded the update for my HTC Sensation!

Went to go ahead with the installation and apparently my battery's too low to proceed, needs to be 35% or over. Now I have to wait another half an hour or so :bang:

How have you gone about the update? Into settings menu and checked for updates?

It just appeared on my notification bar. Although now its finished, the messages don't seem to work! Just got a 'please wait' box which won't go away!

From what I understand they are rolling it out, so not sending all the invites out in one hit.

Just a heads up for O2 HTC Sensation users. Go into your settings and manually check for updates. ICS was found for me and is now installing.

My messages appears to have fixed itself, thankfully. Also, my brother's got the hump because he's got the Desire HD, no updates for it yet!

Did anyone loose anything during the update?

Everything appears pretty much as I left it, apart from some deleted pics & videos that seem to have made a comeback

not that I have noticed, did a full back up before update and iirc out used that backup once ICS had installed. Only thing I had a problem with was getting email to work, changed to K9 mail and all is good

Mines updated overnight, not had a play with it yet..

I've just changed from the iphone to a lovely Sony S still on gingerbread, but really impressed by the phone.

Hey all,

Ive been majorly impressed with my galaxy (on 02) so thought ice cream sandwich was gonna be better again. All my previous phones ive always kept up to date with the latest firmware, and could never understand why people often complained of so many problems installing, updating, then crashing etc after- that is until now

For some reason i couldnt sleep at about 4 o clock this morning (no i didnt s*** the bed ) so thought id update to the newest much talked about firmware. By around 6.30 i finished  The phone decided to disconnect midway through installing so i was left with a dud phone and much panic. Reconnecting the phone had little effect as it still wouldnt show up. I Now sure what happened but after uninstalling kies and reinstalling it managed to perform a emergency firmware recovery.

So now ive got ics on my phone  .................... :bang:

Noticed a few changes with the layout, face recognition but after installing my internet browser wouldnt work- no big deal, i downloaded a different browser (dolphin) and it now works fine.

I was out and about today and felt my phone vibrating- 11.30ish and was surprised to see i hadnt received a message MY BATTERY WAS RUDDY DEAD- DRAINED,EMPTY,NO LIFE IN IT. Im just hoping that its just a one off cause ive never had any phone go dead that quickly. Before the update i could easily get 24 hours + but today i wasnt even using it

How is the Note? My wife's due an upgrade soon and started drooling over the telly ad

I've had mine since early November. It is big, and that's the whole point. It's a tablet that fits in your pocket and allows you to make calls and send SMS without needing another device. The screen is wonderful. One handed use is difficult/impossible, depending on whereabouts on the screen you are trying to reach. The volume and power buttons are too sensitive, poorly placed and protrude a little, meaning they can be activated far too easily by accident - e.g. when using the camera. Battery life, for me, is good. GPS performance is excellent. Under Gingerbread it can be a little laggy, but once an app is up and running it has all the power you need. Maybe ICS will make the experience slicker, but we're still awaiting an official ROM and I don't plan to install a custom ROM on this phone. One attraction for me was the stylus, not least because I used to have a Windows Mobile 5 smartphone a few years back. As it turns out I have found no need for it so the only USP the Note offers is the screen real estate, and for that alone it is the winner, if only to help my ageing eyes to see what I'm doing.

If you want the screen size then get the Note. If you don't want/need 5.3" then I'm sure there are many other options to fit the bill. I'm not a phone whore so I'll be hanging onto the Note for a good while yet. If the Note didn't exist I might take a gander at the new HTC One X, but as it is I'm not looking. :)

If you want more info then have a look at the XDA Forums....

Coley

Hi, Coley, can you confirm - you have a Galaxy S2, are with O2 and have used Kies to upgrade to ICS?

Regards.

Yes, bought payg o2 phone and just popped o2 contract sim in- couldn't wait for upgrade from HTC. I've read a full reset after upgrade might help with issues. Just waiting for phone to charge up so i can do backup etc

Cheers...so the only difference is that I'm on a contract for my phone :thinking::thinking:

This seems to be running along nicely.

Anyone got problems connecting to Kies with the new ICS upgrade?

I have just re-installed my Win 7 on my laptop, as it had bee getting cluttered & slow.

Re-installed Kies & now can't get the S2 to connect :bang:

HELP

Found this & hey presto!!!

Try this:

1. (with phone disconnected) reinstall kies drivers using Keis troubleshooter.
2. enable galaxy s2 debugging mode.
3. connect phone to pc so that the drivers will be installed.
4. disconnect phone and turn debugging mode off.
5. turn phone off and then on again.
6. connect to pc.

Backed up contacts and pictures and did factory reset. Phone lasted 15 hours of very light use, hopefully new firmware might make it last as long as it did with the original firmware

I was running ICS, then went back to Cyanogenmod. Horrible. You don't realise how nice ICS is until you go back to Gingerbread (this is on a DHD though, not S II)

Which rom did you install? the one i just tried doesn't seem to be working

My gf has a gs2 and hasn't updated yet. It's really funny reading this thread. How complicated can they make it to update a phone? iPhone is simple, update available, click update, job done lol

I'd agree...I've read so many articles and people are saying they have what I've got and have ICS and I'm sat here thinking...why is it so frikin' hard  :gag:

Cheers and if anyone has a definitive answer, I'd be grateful...

The problem is google release an update to android, then all the various manufacturers take it and spend time adding their own bits to it before release that update - and then sometime the network provider will also add some parts to the update before release for update over the air.

When apple release an update they just push it straight out to the iphones and there are no middle men wanting to add their own things and taking time.

kies is crap

Agreed!! I spent two hours yesterday updating the mrs s2 and it won't restore from the back up! Just fails everytime!

My mate has the first samsung galaxy. He was telling me he use to get al-sorts of problems with it crashing etc, so i offered to update the firmware for him. 2 + hours of ball ache later and i finally managed to do it for him. That day i vowed never to buy a samsung because of that experience, but........ the s2 had the best specs i was looking for so jumped head first in. I cant figure out how other phone manufacturers make the job so easy to upgrade, yet samsung require you to have the patience, skill and discipline of Mr Miyogi :dummy:

did it prompt you to enter restore letters/code ?

Nope and it didnt ask me to set one when I created the back up in the first place!

I am on a contract with o2 and updated through Keis.

Ggrrrrrr...

I have the latest version of Kies but when I plug my phone in nothing prompts me that there is any updates??

I'm in the same boat. I've no idea why I'm not getting the update.

I can't find anything on the net anywhere as to why.

For me it seems as if vodafone are still testing it and they don't know when they will roll it out. I notice kies only has options to update firmware and am I right in saying the android system is seperate to that? I cant seem to find the option to check android system or am I missing something?

Strange this is, part of me is saying, "You don't really need it. I can do all I need without it!"...but I just want it.

I spend about 2 hours last night searching dozens of sites with no luck.

Guess one day I'll just connect my phone and get the update screen

Cheers and if anyone has any ideas for both of us...we'd be grateful for advice

I was prompted to do it as soon as kies saw my phone connected!

I wonder whether they do it by imei number so they roll it out slowly to everyone and save there servers being overloaded with traffic....
