weekly Ian's 52 of 2016 (Week 27; Activity added)

I actually like number 1 for Captive. The hue and border give it a very vintage look. I think it may be a bit too far and might need a little toning down, but pictures often came out like that so if that's what you were going for, bang on in my eyes (y)
The walker certainly shows a stronger link to Captive, it really portrays the desire to get out and take on the world, like it!

Exactly what I was going for so thank you (:

I missed this somehow, the 2nd one for me, I can just imagine what's going through their tiny mind :D

First of all, a massive thank you to all comments on my Week 2 photos. It's been a really hectic week for me this week and I've not been able to comment on anywhere near as many of the other submissions as I'd have liked. I'll be making up for this over the coming week!

The shots this week were more than a little rushed and with minimal thought in terms of composition etc. Hopefully that doesn't show too much!

The subject, since we were away this weekend sort of fell into my lap (or should I say, breakfast tray) so thought I'd take advantage by taking a few photos of these well known miniatures! Chances are if you've stayed in a hotel in the last decade you may have come across these! (I'd have liked to have added in something to compare the subject/s against to give an idea of scale but just went with what I had in the end).

Without further ado. This is my Week 3 - Miniature

Liking these - nice, clean and crisp shots. Of the three, #2 is my preferred shot. The composition works, with the focus being on the front pot rather than behind. Fab control of dof.

Spooks

Nice shots. Were these shot with natural light? I like the strip of light across the middle of the shot, especially how it lights through the jars in the first one. Like Simon and Michael I think the 2nd is the strongest image but I like that you tried something different with the focus in #3, I think for me that it needs just a little more detail in the front jar.

Thanks, Steve. This was actually indoors with LED down lighters as the back light.

The strip of light is probably part luck, part the silicone at the back of the surface and some slight PP on the label to brighten it up a touch.

Interesting point about the detail in shot 3.

(Something wrong with the Linky ... got here the long way round, via your postings). Nice clean shots Ian. Love the translucency of the honey (and marmalade). My fave is #3.

Thanks, Carl. Always nice to hear a difference of opinion with regards to a favorite shot.

I've been consistently having issues with my links up to now. Which one didn't work out of interest, the main thread to my own?

Yes, that's the one Ian - from main to yours; kept delivering a "This page cannot be displayed" error. PS: Wilkin & Sons marmalade is just the best.

Cheers, Carl. Will have a look later.

Ps yes it is, isn't it?! (Hence these were taken home!)

I want to prefer #3, but it doesn't quite work for me. Maybe if you swapped the positions of the strawberry and orange marmalade to have the lighter one out of focus and the darker one in focus?

As it is it's #2 for me. Good lighting too.

#2. Hotel Jam #2 for me. I like the overlap of the front pot and also the way the light is hitting it is better than #3 where the light appears to be eating the sides of the front pot.

Those 1oz jars are cute. I like #2 as posted on the main thread. (y)

BTW your LINK on the main thread is still not working, not for me!

I have no idea what's going on with the links, will need to have a look later and make sure I'm doing it correctly.

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

The second one just pips it for me over the 1st good take on theme crisp shot

Link didnt work, #1 seem to close together, i like#2 works well, #3the first jar detracts from other jar, good to experiment, good learning process:)
See what you mean about the three being too close. Well spotted.

Thanks for the comment Rob :)

So for the last two weeks I've kinda struggled with what I wanted to shoot for the themes given (as well as time and awful weather!).

I've been playing catch up and as such am updating with both Happy and Abandoned! I've only added one of each for that reason and think that these are the best of those taken. Naturally, I'm happy to take comments and criticism and look forward to hearing what you guys think.

This is my Week 4 - Happy

"The Knot" - For those of you that have 'tied the knot', this is that used in the hand fasting ceremony at the wedding of my wife and I in 2013. To date, one of the happiest days of my life.

This is my Week 5 - Abandoned

"Bing" - My son Ethan's favourite toy just a few weeks ago, Bing has now been relegated. Sorry, Bing.

HI Ian

2 Great images for Happy and Abandoned wit out the explanation for Happy not sure I would of understood it but it fits the theme perfectly, loving the DOF in Abandoned fits the theme nicely

Hi Ian. Yes, I've had the same problem with the latest themes - just can't get my mind into gear. I like your submission for Happy though - nice concept and thinking behind the image. As for Abandoned, poor Bing but inevitable I suppose - no competition with the telly there. I like the 3-stage drop off in DoF from Bing to Ethan to TV.

Hi Ian, sorry I missed your thread until now.

Metal... well well, I recognise that esplanade :) I think they all make good shots but for the theme probably #1 for me. Shame we've had such bad weather - it's made our skies a bit crap.
Captive... I really like the processing on the first one - I think you've nailed that "old print" look. Could bear and EV lift but I like it. Second has nice light coming in through that large patio window. Mugshot is a cracker too - and I've realised the stripey sleepsuit makes it even more appropriate for the theme!
Miniature is a cracking set. For me, the second one is stand-out. The DOF really works well and by placing the OOF behind the main subject, it jars less than #3 which I find slightly uncomfortable.
Happy - I like this, but...
I love Abandoned! I think this is a fantastic take for the theme (as a parent of young kids myself) and I think the camera work is spot on. Very carefully thought through and all the decisions are made wisely as far as composition and "setting". Lighting is good. Spot on!

By the way, if you're based in Inverclyde give me a shout by PM...

The Abandoned shot works very well for me mate. Can be taken to represent growing up or modern life. Either way, it's well composed and bang on theme. Nice one

Hi, very good interpretation of the abandoned theme says it all how screens have taken over our lives to an extent

"Happy" I must say I have heard the expression "tying the knot" but never really given it much thought, you learn something new everyday

HI Ian
2 superb images for Happy and Abandoned, Happy means so much more to the viewer with the explanation. Abandoned is every parents feeling after Christams, when the telly will do and the toys are neglected.Love he lighting and the DoF on Bing is perfectly controlled

Massive thanks to everyone who's commented on my shots so far and apologies that I haven't been able to respond or in some cases even comment on your own. I certainly hope to get around everyone at some point.

Thanks for commenting. I am partial to shallow DoF and am prone to over doing it now and again. Was happy with this one so good to see others who agree with my eye!

Thanks. The TV wasn't initially part of my thinking and more a happy coincidence that it sat well within the frame, source of light and held my son's attention! Out of the two, I'm far happier with the Abandoned shot as the happy one isn't that interesting or obvious without the back story.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up, it's something that I'd love to do but sadly just don't have time so it's very much appreciated. All comments taken on board and yes, the striped sleep suit was intentional for the Captive theme!

Abandoned is probably one of my favourites so far, though there is always room for improvement of course. I have sent you a PM (I think) btw :)

Hi Ian, love the DOF in the abandoned shot and the compo too.

Many thanks. Definitely one of my better shots so far I think.

Nice to see a different take on how the image might fit the theme, even if it wasn't intentional! :) I'm finding more and more that my attention is drawn to shots that provoke thought rather than just, "yeah that's a nice shot" and think the 52 pushes both the photographer and viewer to look at photos differently.

I love your take on abandoned for all the reasons above and the way the reds lead you through the shot. My son has a bedroom full of 'Bings'...though usually their time does come again for a brief few weeks!

Poor Bings! The reds were sadly accidental I must admit. Something for me to consider intentionally next time around though. Thanks for commenting.

Two great pictures, first one i like for its simplicity, the second shows the power of the tv

As above really, Clive. Love that someone can take something different from a shot even if it's not intentional. The TV was certainly powerful enough to hold Ethan's attention for a few minutes at least!

nice take on themes there ian, like the happy take well thought out, poor bing sure looks abandoned, nice use of DOF:)

Cheers, Wally. DoF is a favourite of mine to play about with.

Hi, very good interpretation of the abandoned theme says it all how screens have taken over our lives to an extent

"Happy" I must say I have heard the expression "tying the knot" but never really given it much thought, you learn something new everyday

Tying the knot was something we had to include as soon as we found out about it which was only just prior to the wedding and via our celebrant. Plus, it gives us another item to cherish from the day :)

The screen certainly won't be taking over Ethan's life if I can help it, but sadly that does seem to be the way things are going for us in general (as I sit typing on my laptop haha).

2 superb images for Happy and Abandoned, Happy means so much more to the viewer with the explanation. Abandoned is every parents feeling after Christams, when the telly will do and the toys are neglected.Love he lighting and the DoF on Bing is perfectly controlled

I agree that happy is almost nonsensical without the explanation, though with it thought it was a nice image and clearly would invoke more feelings / thoughts for myself than anyone else.

Bing was indeed one of Ethan's Christmas presents. A few weeks later and he's done :(

Hi Ian I had to Google handfasting as I hadn't heard that term before, I think it's a great idea for the theme and I love the simple composition of the scarf and the heart,

Ahhh Bing bunny ....how many times has that been put on TV when the grandson visits ....I've lost count. Your composition is perfect with your son son engrossed in the screen, great DOF with poor Bing abandoned at the front ....another super shot.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Susie :)

I liked the knot because it was different to the better known mementoes from a wedding day such as rings or a dress. It needs the information to back it up sure, but I'm glad that with that you appreciated the image.

I do like the Bing shot myself. Seems he's now onto Waybuloo and of course, In The Night Garden! (I swear there are subliminal messages in that show!)

Ian, I really like your abandoned shot. DoF is perfect, but the vignette really pushes the eye to the vibrant subject. Love it.

Hi Ian

Sorry, don;t know how ive missed this thread so far - Im on a mammoth catch up session, so here goes !

1 - Metal - I like the re-shoot of the buoy the tighter crop gives it a lot more imposing presence

2 - Captive - that look on his face ! "you just wait until I get out of here! :D excellent

3 - Miniature - I like these a lot but #3 in particular - love the DOF especially with the OOfocus to the front, very nice

4 - Happy - lovely story and interpretation :) - we also have some of those hearts strung around the house

5 - Abandoned ! - lovely DOF and POV, liking this shot a lot, well done

Great start so far- heres to the rest !:)
